YEI Technology's "suit" for real-time in-game motion capture to control your onscreen character blew us away when we saw it last year (video embedded below), and now there's a chance it will hit the consumer market, with a Kickstarter project under way to bring it to fruition.
Called PrioVR, it consists of a series of inertial sensors (accelerometers, gyroscopes, and accelerometers) strapped to the player's body to provide "360 degrees of unfettered low-latency real-time motion capture without the need for cameras, optics, line of sight, or special environments." It captures motion data directly from the body and sends it wirelessly from one or more users, and it can be used in any environment, indoors or out. … Read more
The Oculus Rift is taking its time to perfect for the consumer market, but if you're after a virtual-reality or augmented-reality experience, one product will provide a solution that uses your smartphone as the display.
Called vrAse, it's a 3D-printed headset by Edinburgh, Scotland-based Louise Bankhead. Your smartphone slides into the front, providing the display.
Packed inside the headset is a pair of interchangeable lenses, one for each eye. Using an app that splits your display into two separate images -- what's known as side-by-side or SBS format, for which there are many existing apps -- each eye then sees a slightly different version of the same image, creating an effective 3D view. … Read more
Andrew Scott Reisse, co-founder of the company that made the Oculus Rift virtual-reality headset, was struck and killed while walking in a crosswalk Thursday, ABC has reported.
"Andrew was a brilliant computer graphics engineer, an avid photographer and hiker who loved nature, a true loyal friend, and a founding member of our close-knit Oculus family," the company said in a statement.

Samsung may do something it has never done: Put an Intel chip in a Galaxy Tab.
The Samsung Galaxy 10.1 Android tablet is expected to sport a dual-core 1.6GHz Intel Atom CloverTrail+ chip, industry sources familiar with the product told CNET. The plus sign means the CloverTrial chip packs a high-performance PowerVR SGX544 MP2 graphic processing unit from Imagination Technologies.
Other specs include Android 4.2.2 and a 1,280 x 800 display.
Samsung is slated to reveal the Galaxy Tab at Computex, which starts June 4 in Taipei.
While Intel processors power a raft of Windows … Read more

LAS VEGAS--Not only was this the coolest thing I saw at CES, but it's possibly the coolest thing I've seen ever. As someone who has always been interested in the idea of VR headsets, and always heartbreakingly let down by the reality of VR headsets, I admit I took a rare (for me) CES meeting on a lark. I had heard something about their successful Kickstarter, but honestly, I figured it would just be more of the same.
I was wrong. Not sure I've ever been more wrong. Even in this hand-built prototype stage, the Rift is amazing.… Read more
At its silicon core, the fourth-generation iPad is hardly an incremental upgrade, according to chip analysts.
The new iPad's A6X chip packs a brand-new graphics engine that boasts a serious step up in horsepower from the third-generation iPad's A5X.
"Nothing's incremental about this. The A6X is one massive processing machine," Jim Morrison, a product manager at Chipworks, which does reverse engineering and patent-infringement analysis of semiconductors and electronic systems, told CNET.
Chipworks posted an analysis of the A6X's circuit layout today.
Apple's newest chip is a full 30 percent larger than the A6 … Read more
They say an image is worth a thousand words, but there are situations when a single image just isn't enough. VR Photo helps you by taking multiple photos and combining them into one image that you can view from multiple perspectives.
In the past, if you wanted to share an object with a client or on your website, you had to shoot multiple pictures with the iPhone (or iPod Touch) from each side and then present them one by one. However, VR Photo now does the exact same thing, but better. It guides its users on how to take … Read more
Zoom lenses sell cameras these days, so it's no surprise that manufacturers are doing everything they can to get longer lenses into increasingly smaller bodies.
A 3x or 5x zoom lens used to be the standard for ultracompact cameras -- those measuring 1 inch thick or slimmer -- but in 2012, you can easily find a skinny point-and-shoot with a 10x optical zoom.
The frontrunner here is the sub-$250 Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX150 thanks to its excellent features, fast autofocus, and the quality of its pictures and video (though its color accuracy could be better). Most of the category consists of sub-$200 cameras, though, so there are several options if you're just looking for a simple pocket camera with a long lens.… Read more
