The periodic table of the elements may be welcoming a new member to its elite group soon. A team of scientists led by researchers at Lund University in Sweden has confirmed the existence of a new element. The super-heavy element has atomic number 115.
The team built on earlier work by Russian research groups. The experiment used to confirm the new element took place at a lab in Germany. It involved taking a thin film of americium, a radioactive element with atomic number 95, and bombarding it with calcium ions. This allowed the scientists to measure the element's photons and confirm its atomic number.… Read more

It's been with great interest that I've been following the growth of the new tabletop PC category. These systems are in some ways all-in-one desktops, similar to the Apple iMac, but with the added ability to fold down flat, as in the case of the new HP Envy Rove 20. Others feel more like megatablets, for example the 18-inch Dell XPS 18, which is a close cousin to Windows 8 slates such as Microsoft's Surface Pro. Both types combine big screens and big batteries to create a … Read more
OpenTable has been making restaurant reservations for years, but now it wants to help diners pick up the check.
The online service, which lets users book tables via its smartphone app and Web site, is testing a payment-processing system that will allow diners to pay for their meal from within the app, The New York Times reports. When the check comes at the end of the meal, the diner would open the app to review the check and add tip before paying the bill with a touch of a button, OpenTable CEO Matthew Roberts explained to the Times.

In high school science classes, students are encouraged to memorize the first 20 elements of the periodic table. There are other methods employed at the university level for all 118 -- many students swear by mnemonics.
When it comes to tremendously catchy fun, though, a new song by AsapScience has them all beat. Called simply "The New Periodic Table Song (In Order)," it's a chemical adventure that romps along to a section of "Infernal Galop" (otherwise known as the Can-Can music) from Jacques Offenbach's opera "Orpheus in the Underworld."
It goes, appropriately, at a fast gallop, but listen a few times, and you'll soon find yourself confidently singing along. … Read more
Times Tables Game does a good job of tapping into many of the things that make a good educational app for the iPad, but it is missing some very important components. Due to a limited trial, sometimes messy interface, and convoluted menu system, it works best when a parent directly oversees play by the child.
Times Tables Game is designed to help children learn their times tables in a colorful, easy-to-use interface. With animals, lots of bright colors, and flowers onscreen, combined with light animations, the app is pleasant to look at, though it can get busy and the directions … Read more

The dream of having large-screen interactive touch table computers in every home has taken its sweet time at becoming reality. Maybe it's the cost of the technology, or the lack of a good place to put it. Lenovo seems to think it may also be a matter of furniture fashion.
To spice up the home table PC concept, the company commissioned three unique takes on integrating its $1,700 IdeaCentre Horizon Table PC into the home environment. The designs range from the whimsical to the practical.… Read more
