Twitter temporarily turns out the lights on Anonymous account

Twitter temporarily shuttered Anonymous' most popular account today, which caused a barrage of hate-tweets -- given that the hacker collective despises online censorship.

The account, @youranonnews, which now has more than 800,000 followers, went black around mid-day. The group claims the censorship had to do with a photo it posted regarding a campaign Anonymous has lodged against Westboro Baptist Church after church leaders announce plans to protest at the site of the Newtown, Conn., school massacre.

Once Anonymous' account was restored, the group posted an image of the letter it got from Twitter regarding the temporary suspension.

Twitter suspends Thunderclap 'crowdspeaking' app

Just a day after its launch, the Thunderclap app has apparently been silenced by Twitter.

The app, which allows multiple users to send the same tweet simultaneously, helps users amplify their message by sending a wave of tweets en masse. The app was used for the first time yesterday when 1,922 users sent simultaneous tweets to a pair of U.S. senators.

After a second "thunderclap" was sent to Congress today, the so-called crowdspeaking platform suddenly found itself shut out of Twitter, as the New York company explained in a tweet:

We're having some technical issues … Read more

A new lease on life for Chevy Volt as demand picks up?

The Chevy Volt will restart production "earlier than previously planned" due to an uptick in demand, General Motors announced earlier this week, but will this help to quiet critics?

The plug-in hybrid electric vehicle had been slated for a five-week production suspension, but that will be cut to four weeks, according to a report in the Detroit Free Press.

This is "due to increased Volt sales since January and the need to meet demand in our strong markets, including California," GM said in a statement, according to the Free Press.

The Volt came under withering criticism from some in the mediaRead more

WashPo writer suspended after Twitter hoax

A Washington Post sports columnist was suspended for a month on Tuesday after the newspaper concluded that he was too cavalier with the publication's reputation when he intentionally used his Twitter account to plant a false story.

Mike Wise, a well-known columnist at The New York Times before moving to the Post in 2004, was out to illustrate how sloppy sports journalism has become in the age of shoot-first blogging and social networking. On Monday, he posted to Twitter this message: "Roethlisberger will get five games, I'm told."

He was referring to Ben Roethlisberger, quarterback for … Read more

Heavy Metal: The 2011 Chevrolet Silverado

I figured since we gave lip service to Ford, we'd do the same for one of America's other automotive competitors: Chevrolet. The gang at GM has been working hard to deliver an updated version of its signature pickup truck, the Chevy Silverado, and not too long ago the production version of this heavy-duty truck was delivered. So what's different or notable about this year's model? This video from PickUpTrucks.com has got the scoop.

One of the highlights covered in this clip includes the Silverado HD's brand-new chassis; in fact it's so new that … Read more

Ford Edge gets a make over for 2011

Earlier this year at the Chicago Auto Show, Ford unveiled its production-ready 2011 Edge. So what's new for this year's model? The folks at Kelley Blue Book are here to give you the low down on the newest addition to the Ford family of utility vehicles.

By looking at the 2011 Ford Edge you know that something's different about it--its design and appearance have undergone an obvious transformation. Carl Long: A (rare) moment to remember

Earlier this week, I explained that I had chosen to focus on NASCAR for this week's blog because they had been in the news quite a bit lately. It turns out that it was a somewhat prophetic statement, as just a few days ago NASCAR made headlines again for suspending driver Carl Long for the next 12 Sprint Cup races. Not only that, but his chief crew member Charles Swing was fined $200,000, a record-setting fine for NASCAR. In addition, Long was penalized 200 points, another new NASCAR high. Story has it that Long and Swing were put … Read more

Jeremy Mayfield makes Daytona 500

If you've been keeping up with sports news, you might know that roughly a week ago NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield (#41) and members of his pit crew were suspended indefinitely for violating NASCAR's substance abuse policy. Tough break for Mayfield as he was seemingly on a roll this year. In fact, this video originally produced by ESPN2 shows Mayfield's run to compete in this year's 2009 Daytona 500. He managed to qualify, but with his suspension in effect, no one can be sure what the future holds as of now. But hey, we all make mistakes, … Read more

When projects hang over your head, literally

We appreciated the "Easy Desk Aluminum" laptop stand because it suited our hopelessly slothful lifestyle, but we're not so sure about the "Ergopod 500" by Office Organix that's featured on Neatorama. It's not that we doubt its usefulness--as the company indicates, the setup can be used by bedridden individuals or others who can't use computers in any other position. What would concern us is the precarious-looking configuration of the equipment, as shown in this accompanying picture with the large monitor hanging over the guy's head. We wouldn't want to be … Read more
