Five stylish cars for the everyday driver

Cars such as Ferraris and Maseratis look beautiful, but unless you live in Monaco you rarely see them on the road. However, there are everyday cars, much more affordable than the exotics, that still offer striking design. These are the cars you are more likely to see -- and notice -- in your local grocery market parking lot. They also illustrate the fact that nice design does not have to be expensive.… Read more

Five top gas-saving (non-electric) cars

Hybrid and electric cars turn in the best fuel economy numbers, but if you are not ready to trust that newfangled technology, here are five gasoline-driven cars that manage very good mileage. For this round-up, we stuck with recent models we have actually driven. Instead of focusing on the highway fuel economy number, which many automakers do in their advertising, we looked at the combined city and highway numbers. … Read more

Convertible Toyobaru concept to debut in Geneva

It looks like Toyota's looking to rebuild buzz for one of the hottest cars launched in 2012 by dropping the top on a convertible concept variant of the GT86 coupe at the 2013 International Motor Show in Geneva.

The FT-86 Open revives the "FT" concept designation and hints at a possible, future open-air version of the GT86 coupe. The 2.0-liter, RWD coupe (which is sold in the U.S. as the Scion FR-S and has been nicknamed the "Toyobaru" thanks to its co-development with Subaru) has been compared on many … Read more

Scion's first real sports car (FR-S, get it?)

The buzz around the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ sister-ships has been very strong, yet the FR-S CNET tested met the hype. Driving the FR-S is one of the more sublime experiences you can have in a car.

Rear-wheel drive and a very mechanical feeling, precise six-speed manual transmission contribute to the sports car attributes, and the engine uses a direct injection system that helps it output 100 horsepower per liter, pretty good for natural aspiration. However, the power feels a little flat until you are up at 6,000rpm. The FR-S won't win any drag races, so don'… Read more

Scion raises iQ with the PlayStation Vita

Scion's new iQ model bolsters its claim on the youth market with its tiny size, cartoonish looks, and low price. To push that appeal further, Scion announced that each car will include a PlayStation Vita portable gaming system.

This promotion starts today and runs through July 31, or while supplies last, according to Scion's press release. Scion expects to sell about 800 iQs per month, if it tracks close to xB and xD sales. If it does that well at launch, Scion could be forking over a couple thousand Vitas -- again, if supplies last.

Whether the inclusion … Read more

2013 Subaru BRZ Limited: Believe (most of) the hype

Take a moment and mentally process all of the hype surrounding the launch of the 2013 Subaru BRZ. Go on, I'll wait. Now take that hype and dial it back to 80 percent. That's how good the Subaru BRZ is. It's not the second coming or the messiah for performance driving -- it's not perfect -- but it is quite good.

The B in BRZ should stand for "balanced" because that's exactly what Subaru's new rear drive coupe is. This car is all about balance with a near 50-50 weight distribution between … Read more

Subaru BRZ, Scion FR-S rated by EPA, results are 'meh'

We're starting to get just a little excited about impending U.S. launch of the Toyobaru twins: the 2013 Subaru BRZ and 2013 Scion FR-S. We've taken more than a few longing looks at each of these cars since their announcement, Subaru's pre-order page is already up, and now (thanks to the EPA's fuel economy web site) we have an idea of what fuel economy you can expect, should you chose to make one of of these vehicles your daily driver.

The Subie and Scion feature identical 2.0-liter, four-cylinder boxer engines that make use of … Read more

OEM Audio Plus delivers car sound in a box upgrade for Scions

Going through lists of amps, speakers, and subwoofers in a quest to upgrade your car's audio can be baffling. OEM Audio Plus removes the confusion, at least for Scion owners, by providing a complete package.

CNET tested the company's audio upgrade in the Scion tC. OEM Audio Plus also offers sound system upgrades for the xB and iQ, and is working on a package for the FR-S and xD.

The upgrade consists of replacements for all the existing speakers, and the addition of an eight-channel 360-watt amp and an 8-inch subwoofer with a 130-watt amp to power it. … Read more

Look fondly on these cars, even if they represent the one that got away, or the one that was a total psycho, because after the wedding and the kids some, you will be driving a minivan.… Read more

Scion.com gets a new coat of paint

I've had a sort of love/hate relationship with the tech in Scion's vehicles, but I've always had a definitively hate/hate relationship with the automaker's Web site. The latter of those two relationships changes for the better today with a relaunch and redesign of the Scion.com domain.

The new site ditches the dark color scheme and Flash animations in favor of a light and airy design that loads quickly. The new Scion.com seems to put the vehicles at the forefront of the browsing experience, making it easier for users to find what they'… Read more
