Find My iPhone app delivers police to suspected robbers

Apple's freebie gadget-tracking app led to a quick recovery of goods stolen in a string of multiple robberies in Hollywood over the weekend, as well as the arrests of the suspected thieves.

CBS Local today notes that Apple's Find My iPhone app was used by an owner of one of the stolen devices, along with the help of the Los Angeles Police Department, to track down where the goods -- which included wallets, too -- were stashed. … Read more

Gadget store heist: Mom made me do it

Moms can dominate their sons sometimes.

They see in their little boys something they possibly didn't see in their own husbands -- obedience, perhaps.

I foray into psychological waters only because of a fascinating legal case involving a heist at the PC World store in Kingston, U.K.

It seems that gunmen allegedly marauded in, pointed fake Uzis at the staff, and stole 38,000 British pounds (around $61,000). However, in the midst of their bravado, they started arguing about whether to steal some laptops, too, and ran away separately.

Police managed to track down one of the … Read more

Steve Jobs' stolen iPad lands in the hands of 'Kenny the Clown'

The thief who robbed Steve Jobs' home in July may not have been clowning around. But one of the iPads he stole ended up doing so.

Professional entertainer "Kenny the Clown" reportedly received the hot iPad from a friend, 35-year-old Kariem McFarlin, who has confessed to the crime and is being held in jail in lieu of bail before he appears in court on Monday.

Jobs' Palo Alto home was robbed on July 17 of more than $60,000 in computers and other items, the Santa Clara County District Attorney's office revealed on Tuesday. The burglar was … Read more

Police: Burglar nabbed after turning on Steve Jobs' stolen Macs

Whoever broke into the home of the late Steve Jobs is probably now wishing that a different house had been the target.

The Palo Alto, Calif., home was robbed on July 17 of more than $60,000 in computers and other items, according to the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office. Kariem McFarlin, a 35-year-old man, was arrested and charged with the crime.

And apparently it wasn't hard for police to catch him.

After some of the stolen computers were plugged in, the PCs communicated with Apple servers to perform needed upgrades, according to The Daily. That alerted Apple security people and Palo Alto police, … Read more

Girl posts Facebook pic of cash, robbers visit mom

It's unfortunate that people still seem to think Facebook is as private as, say, the telephone. Or the home.

The latest incident occurred Thursday in Australia when a 17-year-old girl was helping her grannie count her retirement savings. No, these savings don't appear to have been in a bank, with online access.

They were at her grannie's house in Sydney -- in cash.

The girl may have quite enjoyed herself because, as the BBC reports, she then posted a picture of the cash on Facebook.

Perhaps she thought this would amuse her friends. It certainly didn't … Read more

Chicago restaurants stop taking cell phone orders

You might think possession of a cell phone makes you more dynamic, more modern, more attractive to everyone around.

However, some restaurants in Chicago are now coming to believe that it merely signifies you're a robber.

As CBS Chicago communicates it, so many delivery drivers have been robbed by cell phone orderers in certain parts of Chicago that some restaurants are reportedly now only prepared to deliver to landline possessors.

Chinatown and Hyde Park are the two areas where cell phone miscreants appear to have had their pizza and eaten it.

It seems to have become such a problem … Read more

Watch this now: Daylight iPad snatch-and-grab

Hold onto your iPads, boys and girls. Even in broad daylight:

To recap: A fellow is sitting outside at Espresso Royale, a two-story coffee house in Champaign, Ill. Two men walk out the door, one of whom snatches the gray-shirted fellow's iPad and legs it down the street. The other accused robber stands in front of the victim for a moment, flashing a weapon stashed in his waistband to chill things out a bit. A moment later, he calmly walks away as if nothing ever happened.… Read more

iPhone 5 camper hears London Apple store robbery

The whole point of camping outside an Apple store in anticipation of some shiny new toy is that it should be exciting.

People should come up to you, chat with you, and take pictures. News organizations should interview you. And, should there be a smash-and-grab robbery, you should be there to tell everyone what it was like.

How heart-warming, then, for Rob Shoesmith, who is currently camping outside the Apple store in London's Covent Garden, that he was woken by a motorcycle gang who allegedly smashed their way into the store and grabbed around $75,000 worth of goodies.… Read more

Facebook date forces woman to be getaway driver

These days, if you don't meet your date online, there must be something a little wrong with you.

There is a small cabal of humans, however, who are still uncertain as to whether someone you meet on, say, Facebook, mightn't be married. Or merely a hardened criminal.

I mention this dilemma because of the tale of 23-year-old Leah Gibbs, from Rhondda, South Wales.

The way The Daily Mail presents it, Gibbs met Adam Minton on Facebook and agreed to be his date. Her hope was that they would spend their first encounter watching a DVD at Minton's … Read more
