Pinterest now offers more than pretty pictures

Pinterest now offers users more information behind all those pretty pictures.

The scrapbooking social network today tweaked the power of certain pins to provide more details on the showcased items, thanks to new active links to third-party Web sites. As described in the company's official blog, Pinterest is working with popular Web sites to enrich the pinning experience. For instance, some of the tasty dishes in the Delicious Eats area now have active links that point to Web sites featuring the recipes.

Product pins reveal pricing and retail outlets where the items are sold. And movie pins offer more … Read more

Pinterest lets you pass pins on to friends

Digital scrapbooking service Pinterest is making it easier for members to send their inspirational finds to friends who might also enjoy them.

On Thursday, the company added a "Send" button to pins on Web and mobile, which means members can click the button to forward a pin to any of their Pinterest pals, Facebook friends, or email contacts.

"Your friend will see the pin in their notifications or in their email," software engineer Sunny Rochiramani wrote in a blog post. "If they repin, like or comment on the pin, we'll let you know through … Read more

Google+'s stream gets Pinterest-like makeover at I/O

The Google+ news stream is getting a new face.

The new display is very similar in style whether viewed from a mobile device or large-screen computer. The only real difference is that it switches from one to three columns depending on the device used.

The change to Google's nearly 2-year-old social network was unveiled during the company's keynote at Google I/O, an annual developers conference in San Francisco.

At first blush when viewed on a large screen, the new design bears some resemblance to the social networking site Pinterest. However, Google is giving certain types of media, … Read more

Pinterest makes mobile apps more social with mentions

Pinterest released a handful of updates to its iOS and Android applications to give its members on mobile more of the features they find on the digital scrapbook service's Web site.

The Pinterest for Android and iOS apps were updated Tuesday with push notifications, mentions, and a better search experience. People using the iOS app can also now pin from an external website inside the app.

Mentions mean that app users can tag other people in their updates and enjoy better pin-related conversations. Notifications for new comments or mentions give people a reason to keep coming back to the … Read more

'Pinterest stress' not just for moms?

I don't know exactly when it happened, but I can now say for sure that I live in a Pinterest household. The influence of the digital pinboard has infiltrated numerous aspects of life in the Mack family palace, from our wardrobe to nightly dinners to the bling I've been instructed to install on the door of the oven those dinners are cooked in.

That's right, I'm going to bling out my oven because my wife told me to, because it looked cool to her in a thumbnail on a punnily named social network.

This is not quite the future the Jetsons promised us, but we're living it.

So I was very interested to read the findings of a recent survey about what stresses out American moms. The online survey of more than 7,000 women in the U.S. was conducted by Insight Express/NBC News for TodayMoms.com and revealed one particularly fascinating nugget:

Measuring up to all the cool crafts they see on Pinterest causes stress for 42 percent of moms.

Review: Official Pinterest app for iPhone and iPad builds on the popular photo-sharing network

Pinterest exploded onto the scene a couple years ago as the biggest, hottest new social network on the Web, and for good reason. The clever integration of Facebook and Twitter functionality with an image-focused social network in which users could pin, comment on, and share just about anything cool they find was perfect. One of the driving factors in the success of Pinterest, however, is the exceptional mobile apps developed by the company. Today's iOS app continues to be one of the best social experiences on Apple's devices, and for good reason.

To start, Pinterest is designed for … Read more

Pinterest goes to battle over Amazon domain play

Here's one that can't come as a surprise to the legal team at Amazon.com: Pinterest is fighting Amazon's bid to win the contract to control the .pin generic top-level-domain, or gTLD.

Among the reasons for Pinterest's objections: Domain names on .pin -- clothes.pin, say, or whatever Amazon has in mind -- would cause confusion and violate the trademarks that Pinterest holds on the term "pin." Those trademarks include "the standalone PIN trademark and a family of PIN-formative marks, including Pinterest, PIN It, P, and others," according to the complaint -- … Read more

Pinterest 'acqui-hires' Livestar team

Pinterest has agreed to purchase Livestar, a 2-year-old mobile application that doles out recommendations for restaurants, movies, and music, the companies announced today.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Livestar's application was shuttered immediately, which means that Pinterest's purchase is technically an "acqui-hire" and is motivated entirely by an interest in pinning down more talent.

The engineering team behind Livestar's soon-to-be-defunct service is transferring over to the social network for inspiration in the weeks ahead. But Livestar founder and CEO Fritz Lanman, a former Microsoft executive and angel investor with a stake in … Read more
