Three tri-band hot spots join Sprint's ranks

LAS VEGAS -- Sprint just announced a trio of tri-band LTE mobile hot spots today at CTIA 2013. The devices are the Netgear Zing, the Netgear 341U, and the Novatel Wireless MiFi 500LTE.

The most striking product is the Netgear Zing, which not only connects to Sprint's 3G and 4G networks to supply up to 10 users simultaneously, it also features a large LCD touch screen. In fact Sprint claims it's the first hot spot it has offered with a touch-controlled display. Another added bonus to the Zing is it's capable of roaming globally on GSM networks. … Read more

AT&T sells Samsung Express, touch-screen hot spot Nov. 16

On November 16, AT&T will begin selling two new devices. The MiFi Liberate stands out as the first hot spot with a touch screen. The device, which is designed by Novatel Wireless, can connect up to 10 devices and will sell for $49.99 with a new two-year service agreement. It qualifies, of course, for AT&T's shared data plan.

AT&T will also stock shelves with the Samsung Galaxy Express, a $99.99 midrange 4G LTE smartphone. It sports Android 4.0, a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen, and a 1.5GHz dual-core … Read more

Verizon Jetpack MiFi 4620L mobile hot-spot review: It's a Rocketeer

I can't count anymore how many mobile routers I have reviewed, but that also means that I know the Verizon Jetpack 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot MiFi 4620L by Novatel Wireless is different.

And it's not because of its crazy long name.

Instead, it's partly because of its craz,y long battery life. The router is the first I've seen that comes with two batteries. The standard one offers about 5.5 hours of continuous usage on a charge, and the second one offers about twice that. Combine the two, you have about two days' worth of charge, if you only use it during working hours that is.… Read more

Blast off! Verizon's LTE Jetpack hot spot launches April 12

Hotspotters, start your engines. The latest MiFi hot spot, known formally as the Verizon Jetpack Hotspot MiFi 4620L, delivers 4G LTE to up to 10 devices.

We first heard of the Novatel-made Jetpack at CES, where it was one of two hot spots revealed at the show. The Jetpack promises 4G data speeds up to 12Mbps down and 5Mbps up. The global-ready MiFi will work wireless data services in more than 205 countries -- though expect to surf 3G speeds in more than 125 of them.… Read more

XCom Global Wi-Fi service: 0 to addicted in 24 hours

BARCELONA, Spain--Even with some significant engine trouble, it took me a day to go from zero to addicted to XCom Global's MiFi rental service for travelers.

TheInter Communications subsidiary offers a handy service--$14.95 a day to rent a mobile MiFi network access point with unlimited data access when you're traveling abroad.

The price looks painful until you compare it to the alternative: I just paid my French carrier, SFR, a whopping 19 euros (more than $25) for a measly 40MB of data while I'm at the Mobile World Congress show here. And carrier gouging isn'… Read more

How to turn your Wi-Fi iPad into an iPad 3G

Maybe you're one of those people who couldn't wait for the 3G version of Apple's iPad and instead had to run out and get the Wi-Fi version right away. We mainly think of the iPad as a living room/kitchen device, but with the warmer weather arriving you might be feeling a bit of 3G envy, seeing newly minted iPad 3G owners soaking up the sun in their local parks and coffee shops while tapping, swiping, and pinching away.

The typical solution for getting a go-anywhere 3G signal on a Wi-Fi-only device such as a laptop or Netbook has traditionally been a 3G USB key--but, of course, lacking a USB port or a way to install the required software, we can't use our 3G USB key on the iPad. Smartphone tethering would work also, but if you have an iPad, there's a good chance you've also got an iPhone, so no tethering for you unless you jailbreak your phone.

The solution is a device we've talked about several times before, the Novatel MiFi, a portable wireless router that takes the 3G signal it receives and broadcasts it as a Wi-Fi signal. We've previously reviewed versions of the Novatel hardware from Verizon and Sprint (and the infamous Technobeaver has weighed in on the MiFi as well).

Hooking the MiFi up to our non-3G iPad was easy. We powered on the MiFi box, and its signal was immediately recognized by the iPad, and listed in the Network Settings submenu, along with all the other Wi-Fi signals in the area. Selecting the MiFi connection, we were prompted to enter a password (as one would do for any secure Wi-Fi connection); the password is a string of numbers printed on a sticker on the bottom of the MiFi unit itself. Up to five devices can connect at once, and the device's range is about 30 feet. … Read more

Mulling mobile broadband options

I've been thinking about buying a new gizmo, and it turns out I'm not the only one in the family having these thoughts.

My sister sent me an e-mail over the weekend:

I need a 3G card for my laptop and I'm going to get it from Verizon. What should I ask for? I just don't want them to try to sell me more or less than I need.

Coincidentally, I've been looking into the latest options for mobile broadband access for a couple of months now, ever since the two-year contract ran out on … Read more

Sprint to bring MiFi 2200 mobile hot spot in June

Just one week after Verizon Wireless made its announcement, Sprint said on Wednesday that it will also offer the Novatel Wireless MiFi 2200 mobile hot spot device starting the first week of June.

The MiFi frees you from having to search out a Wi-Fi hot spot by providing instant wireless access using Sprint's EV-DO EV-DO Revision A network. It supports up to five Wi-Fi-enabled devices (laptops, MP3 players, gaming devices, etc.), and unlike the Verizon version, Sprint's model supports the MiFi's GPS capabilities so you can use it with location and mapping applications. The MiFi also includes … Read more
