Nano-SIM: The micro micro-SIM

Awhile ago, Apple said it wanted SIM cards to be even smaller than the already tiny micro-Sim used in the iPhone 4 and 4S, and now the nano-SIM card is basically here.

Giesecke & Devrient, a German technology company, today announced a SIM card that's just two-thirds the size of the micro-SIM. The company says the new nano-SIM enables manufacturers to produce devices that are even thinner while offering an equivalent, if not better, level of wireless performance.

The new nano-SIM could find its way into mobile devices as early as next year. The relationship between Apple and G&D is unclear, but we're going to make an educated guess that you might find this in the next generation of the iPhone.… Read more

Apple selling unlocked, contract-free iPhone 4S

iPhone 4S buyers looking for an unlocked version of the new phone can now grab one directly from Apple.

The company has just started selling an unlocked and contract-free version of its new phone. In a nutshell, that means you can use the iPhone 4S without shelling out money for the usual two-year carrier contract. You can then jump from one network to another by picking up and inserting a micro-SIM card, which is available from each supported carrier.

An unlocked phone is especially handy for people who travel around the world and want to be able to use it … Read more

T-Mobile offers Micro SIM cards for iPhones

T-Mobile USA began selling a Micro SIM card today, necessary for people who want to bring their iPhones or iPads over to its network.

It's an awkward offer as T-Mobile is openly encouraging iPhone customers--of the AT&T variety, and not Verizon Wireless--to switch carriers. At the same time, AT&T is attempting to acquire T-Mobile in a deal that would create the nation's largest wireless provider.

T-Mobile lists the Micro SIM card on its Web site, and is selling it for $9.99 or giving it away with a two-year contract. Next to the photo, … Read more

Apple reportedly aims to shrink micro-SIM card

The micro-SIM card found in Apple's iPhone 4, both generations of the iPad, and an increasing number of mobile devices could be going on a diet once again.

Reuters reported today that Apple has put forth plans to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) for a smaller version of micro-SIM that could bring extra space-saving advantages to mobile gadgets.

"We were quite happy to see last week that Apple has submitted a new requirement to ETSI for a smaller SIM form factor--smaller than the one that goes in iPhone 4 and iPad," Anne Bouverot, Orange's head … Read more

Make your micro-SIM bigger

Apple started a new trend when it introduced the micro-SIM card found in the Apple iPhone 4 and the iPad 3G. Like a regular SIM, the micro-SIM holds the necessary subscriber information while losing some of the plastic border. Apple says that the smaller cards make more room for a larger battery, but they also come with a couple of trade-offs. For example, the smaller size means that the micro-SIM won't fit into a standard card slot an vice versa.

Leave it to the marketplace, however, to come up with solutions. We've already told you about a toolRead more

SIM to micro-SIM

The iPad introduced us to the micro-SIM card and if the new iPhone HD uses a micro-SIM as expected, moving an iPhone 3GS SIM card to the devices won't be easy. So what's an Apple fan to do? Well, a German Dutch outfit is now offering a tool to save the pain of snipping a SIM card with a pair of scissors.

Cut My SIM promises to trim your standard SIM card down to size. The small silver tool resembles a cross between a stapler and hole punch (remember those?). Just slip your SIM card inside and it … Read more
