Kindle sales keep growing, with Amazon announcing the devices had their best-selling holiday weekend yet, while the company continues to chase short-form e-books with a new publishing shop.
The first in a pair of announcements Wednesday, Amazon said last weekend was the best holiday-shopping performance for Kindle so far, with customers purchasing more Kindle Fire tablets and Kindle e-readers than ever before.
As is typical of the massive online retailer, Amazon declined to give any hard figures to back up the declaration, though it noted the 7-inch Kindle Fire HDX and Kindle Fire HD were the best-selling items on Amazon.… Read more
And if you've ever plunked down in bed or on the couch to read something, you've probably discovered that the screen will automatically rotate between portrait and landscape orientations depending on how you hold your phone or tablet. This can be useful, or it can be a huge hassle -- especially if you move around a lot and don't want the screen constantly shifting back and forth.… Read more
Cyber Monday. The online yang to Black Friday's brick-and-mortar yin. Truth be told, I don't usually find this day terribly exciting, if only because the deals rarely exceed what I find all year 'round.
That said, there are deals to be had, oh yes. Here are five especially good ones.
1. Big TV, small price. Most bargain-basement TVs incorporate older technology, like traditional backlighting and slow refresh rates. Not this one: For a limited time, and while supplies last, Groupon has the Westinghouse UW46T7HW 46-inch HDTV for $299.99 shipped.
This model may qualify as entry-level, but it … Read more

In the tech world, the holiday spirit involves the right cross, the jarring upper-cut, and what they call in England the Glasgow Kiss.
If you're not out there explaining to people why your product is better than an Apple offering, then you simply don't realize what's at stake in stuffing the Christmas stocking.
After Microsoft has offered its consistent pummeling of the iPad, into the ring steps Amazon. And how.
To present its Kindle tablet, Washington state's other tech company decides it's going to compare its graces with the iPad Air.

Windows gets small Not everyone is convinced that Windows 8 works well as a desktop or laptop OS, but what about in an 8-inch tablet? That's the question answered by the Dell Venue 8 Pro, which is already an intriguing buy at $299.
Less than two months after unveiling a new Kindle Paperwhite, Amazon is said to have another refresh in the pipeline for next year.

The new screen will put Amazon on technical par with the 265ppi Kobo Aura HD, which formerly boasted of the highest-resolution display available in an e-reader. The Kindle Paperwhite released in October features a 212ppi screen.
In addition to an improved screen, the new model will resemble the Kindle HDX and be lighter than the … Read more

Apple's iPad Mini with Retina Display can't match Amazon's Kindle Fire HDX or the Google Nexus 7 in overall display quality, according to screen tester DisplayMate.
DisplayMate on Tuesday published its findings on the picture quality of the iPad Mini with Retina Display, the 7-inch Kindle Fire HDX, and Google's Nexus 7. While both Amazon and Google scored high marks in the study, Apple's tablet "comes in with a distant third-place finish."
