Apple published an updated chart on its developer Web site for the iOS App Store, which shows that iOS 7 is now on 74 percent of all iOS devices. This means adoption of the operating system has grown 10 percent since numbers last reported in October.
I want my iPhone contacts list to contain only phone contacts. I need neither Facebook friends nor e-mail contacts included. And with iOS 7, there is an easy way to hide e-mail contacts from your contacts list.
I previously covered how to remove Facebook friends from your contacts list, and that process remains the same for iOS 7. For e-mail contacts, however, there is a faster and easier way than going into Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars and then toggling off Contacts for each e-mail account.
With iOS 7, it creates a group for each e-mail account. This means that … Read more
Google's Android ecosystem will be breathing down Apple's neck in 2014, according to IDC, which offered predictions for 2014.
Google Play/Android downloads and revenues "are making dramatic gains and the app ecosystem value gap will be significantly narrowed" with Apple in 2014, according to IDC. That was one of the predictions published Tuesday, among a bevy of predictions for 2014.
Here's what IDC said:
The mobile device onslaught will continue in 2014 with sales of tablets growing by 18% and smartphones by 12%. The Android community, led by Samsung, will maintain its volume advantage … Read more
When I first put on a Pebble smartwatch shortly after it was made available at Best Buy, I was excited. The thought of being able to leave my phone in my coat pocket, or in another room, and receiving alerts on my wrist was very appealing. Quickly I realized the watch only lived up to half of the hype I had built up in my mind. As someone who switches back and forth between iOS and Android on a nearly weekly, sometimes daily, basis, it didn't take a long time for me to see there were plenty of shortcomings … Read more
Add an Apple-style lock screen to your Android tablet or phone with iOS 7 Lockscreen Parallax HD. This free (but ad-supported) app from Apper Shopper replaces your usual lock screen with a close copy of iOS 7's parallax 3D wallpaper and functionality. With connectivity, battery, and camera buttons discreetly accompanying svelte time, day, and date displays, the Zen-like purity of the iOS design makes a nice alternative to the usual Android clutter -- once you're past some ads, that is.
As we noted, some ads stand between you and iOS 7 Lockscreen's setup options, and again when … Read more
Although you can't deny the popularity of flagship handsets, manufacturers aren't shying away from offering devices that are just one notch down from their highest tiered smartphones.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini, for instance, recently landed on Verizon and Sprint (with plans to reach AT&T and U.S. Cellular customers soon). It costs $99.99 on contract, though with temporary rebates and deals, Sprint is offering it for free to new customers only. The device features many of the things users love about the Galaxy S4, but in a smaller, slightly less powerful package.
Likewise, Motorola … Read more
If you haven't upgraded your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to iOS 7 yet, I have only one question: What are you waiting for?
That's not to say the new version of Apple's mobile OS is perfect. Here are four iOS 7 privacy settings you may want to review.
1. Clear and disable Frequent Locations Some people don't mind Apple tracking their location and retaining a history of the places where they use their iOS 7 devices. The rest of us have to disable the mobile OS's Frequent Locations feature, which is enabled by default.… Read more
Who knows what Apple's app designers were thinking when they crafted Find My Friends to look like a leather glove, complete with stitching.
With the arrival of iOS 7, all of the core apps (and most of the optional ones) got a much-ballyhooed "flat" redesign -- except for Find My Friends. It remained, to many, the ugly odd-app-out.
Well, today it's ugly no more. Apple just pushed out Find My Friends 3.0, which has no major new features but an entirely new appearance. The orange-hued icon meshes well with other iOS 7 apps, while the … Read more
Are you ready for iOS gaming to evolve to accept buttons? The long-rumored Logitech iOS game controller, the Logitech PowerShell Controller + Battery, is finally official and is available to order today for $99.99. And yes, it does look exactly like we expected. I got a chance to play with one myself at CNET's offices to learn a little more about it.
Games in the App Store are already getting quite advanced, but when it comes to classic-style games, having real buttons would be a big help. And these controllers are finally here, just in time for holiday shoppers … Read more
Moga, a company that has been making Android game controllers since its inception, has finally jumped into the iOS 7 space.
The company on Tuesday announced the Moga Ace Power gamepad, a device made for iPods and iPhones running iOS 7. The gamepad, which will cost $100 when preorders are made available this week, is essentially two pieces -- one for a thumbstick and D-Pad and the other featuring another thumbstick and action buttons. Users simply slip their iOS 7-based device into the controller, lock the two sides around the screen, and they're on their way.
Moga claims that … Read more
