After showing off a rough design update to its Steam Controller at its annual Steam Dev Days conference back in January, Valve has decided, definitively it would appear, to strip the touch screen from the handheld and replace it with a logo-emblazoned home button alongside start and select buttons. And new to the latest prototype design is a protruding d-pad and X, Y, A, and B button layout similar to that of an Xbox controller.
Many of us rely on our computers as entertainment hubs for watching videos and listening to music. Having a remote control to manage simple functions like play/pause, fast-forward, and volume makes a lot of sense. Every now and then, you'll see a physical remote control included with a computer system, but they're pretty rare.
In the absence of an actual remote control, you can use an Android device with the Mac.remote app to control many multimedia applications on your Mac. You can even put your Mac to sleep, shut it down, and control the screen's … Read more
Google's newest acquisition could point to the company adding snazzy gaming components to its rumored upcoming set-top box. The Web giant confirmed on Tuesday that it recently snapped up Green Throttle Games.
Green Throttle Games is known for its Bluetooth Atlas controller and Android Arena app that let users convert smartphones or tablets into makeshift consoles. In a cryptic message posted to its Web site in November, Green Throttle announced that its Arena app would no longer be available and all backend support for the app was ending.
"Stick around and we'll keep you posted on the … Read more
The plight of the kitchen utensil is well documented. That spatula or ladle is incredibly handy when you're cooking and serving, but when it's time to stick it in the dishwasher, things get a little bit murky. Cooking utensils tend to get scattered around my dishwasher like an afterthought, because, well, they are.
GE is hoping to change all that with today's announcement of two new dishwashers, the $1,599 Profile Series Stainless Steel Interior Dishwasher with Hidden Controls PDT760SSFSS and the $1,699 Cafe Series Stainless Interior Built-In Dishwasher with Hidden Controls CDT765SSFSS. Both are revamped … Read more
You don't have to work for NASA to have a cool desk loaded with buttons, switches, knobs, and flickering lights. To encourage his sons' love for space, Jeff Highsmith built them a one-of-a-kind Mission Control Desk.
"I researched the Apollo Program, as well as NASA's Mission Control Center, and designed my own console roughly based on those," Highsmith wrote in his tutorial. "I say 'roughly' because the actual Mission Control does more monitoring than controlling, and isn't awash in the whiz-bang rocket noises young kids appreciate. I took great liberties and made more of a 'space-themed' play console than an accurate simulator. My goal was simply to provide some extra ideas and sound effects for my two sons to play 'space' together."… Read more
In Venezuela, the government controls most of the television stations, so many residents turn to the Internet and social media for news. But, what happens when those get censored?
As the South American country has become engulfed in lethal protests and government crackdowns, it is said that the authorities have now started blocking the Internet -- especially in those states that have seen the most bloodshed.
Widespread student-led protests against President Nicolas Maduro's administration erupted last week. While the government is working to maintain its control of the country, the protesters are calling for Maduro's resignation due to … Read more
Gaming can be a great equalizer. A 13-year-old girl can take on a 72-year-old grandfather online and never know it because they're both just characters inside a game world. All they have to do is pick up a controller and play. Quadriplegics and people with limited use of their arms and hands, however, have a greater challenge. The QuadStick on Kickstarter hopes to be a gaming gateway for folks who need a different kind of controller.
The QuadStick was inspired by the work of Ken Yankelvitz, a pioneer in building mouth-controlled joysticks and other adaptive devices. Yankelvitz is currently not taking orders for new devices due to health reasons, leaving a gap in the market for gamers who can't use traditional controllers.… Read more
One of the more convenient features Apple has put in OS X is its Expose view for showing all windows of an application. While the implementation of this view has changed a little, its utility has been fairly consistent, allowing you to use a swipe gesture or F-key press to see what windows you have open and switch between them.
One early option Apple adopted for invoking Expose view was to click and hold an application's Dock icon; however, this was replaced with a contextual menu option that persists through the most recent versions of OS X. While this … Read more
So far, Cree is only extending SmartCast to commercial and industrial troffers, luminaries, and downlights -- but a simplified approach to lighting controls seems like a smart idea for residential use, too, … Read more
