Well, I don't know what to say about the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse that hasn't already been said. Add to that the fact that we only had access to it on public streets with moderate speed limits and you can see I was in a pickle. So I chose to seek out the essence of the car and tell some of its less-told stories. I hope you find it at least something of a departure from the usual … Read more

Bugatti chief confirms new sedan

When you run a car company with only one model, and that one is over five years old, you should really think about expanding your portfolio. As hinted last year, Bugatti will produce a successor to its Veyron supercar.

Car and Driver translated an article from German magazine Auto Motor und Sport, which has Bugatti CEO Wolfgang Durheimer confirming the new vehicle. Based on the 16 C Galibier concept previously shown, the new car will be a big sedan with a rounded body and rear hatch similar to the Porsche Panamera.

Aluminum and carbon fiber will keep body weight down, … Read more

Gold trimmed, armor-plated Rolls-Royce Phantom, only $8.1M

This raises "bling" to a whole new level: an armor-plated, gold-trimmed Rolls-Royce Phantom.

The eye-catching vehicle was made by special request for an anonymous Middle Eastern businessman. The unique features of the Phantom include 120kg of 18-carat gold interior and exterior trim.

Armor reinforcement allows the Phantom to withstand automatic gun fire, sniper rifle assaults, and even the blast from a hand grenade.

The entire process of adding the gold and armor reinforcement took about 18 months, according to Stuart Hughes, which now features the Phantom on its Web site.

Liverpool-Based Stuart Hughes collaborated with Swiss company Eurocash AG to create the lavish vehicle, the company states. Eurocash AG offers the Phantom for rent, but for not sale.… Read more

10 fastest cars of 2011

There's no real need for a production car to go over 200 mph. Few public roads in the world allow that kind of speed, whether legally or physically. But a few automakers continually push the boundaries of speed, for the same reasons that mountain climbers scale the highest peaks.

The fastest production cars hit well over 200 mph, using big displacement or near-racing engines to achieve these speeds. Of course, all of these cars are ridiculously expensive, but the varieties of design will come as a surprise.

We've assembled photos and specifications for the current crop of fastest … Read more

Bugatti replacement: More luxury, fewer horses

Bugatti, Volkswagen Group's exotic sports-car brand, is ending production of its Veyron and will replace it with the tamer but more luxurious Galibier.

16C Galibier: The four-seat sedan is expected to go on sale in 2013 for about $1.5 million. Only 300 will be produced.

The Galibier, which is made of carbon fiber and aluminum, will use the Veyron's 8.0-liter W-16 engine, but will employ superchargers rather than turbochargers--producing 800 horsepower.

Veyron 16.4: The limited-edition, two-passenger Veyron, which was introduced in 2005, is near the end of its 300-unit production run. So far, 260 have … Read more

Bugatti Veyron Super Sports reclaims world's fastest title

If you call yourself a car buff, then you already know Bugatti's fire breathing, 1,001 horsepower, 253 mph Veyron 16.4 is the second fastest car in the world--its title usurped by the 256 mph SSC Ultimate Aero TT in 2007. With the mighty Veyron scheduled to end production, Bugatti couldn't put the beast to pasture as second best, so it built a better one: the 1,200 horsepower, record shattering Veyron Super Sports.

Bugatti's engineers attacked the Veyron's W-16 engine with larger turbos (the Veyron has four of them), intercoolers, and revised its engine … Read more

Designers attempt to build a better Bugatti (concept car Friday)

The Bugatti Veyron EB 16.4 sits as a halo car among halo cars, but the 5-year-old aesthetic of the 1,001-horsepower supercar is starting to look a bit long in the tooth. But with the exception of the awkwardly styled 16C Galibier concept, Bugatti seems content to trot out variants and special editions of the same Veyron for the last few car show seasons, leaving the rest of us to speculate as to the nature of the hypercar of the next decade.

Enter Racer X Design. This independent auto design team has taken the major design cues of the … Read more

Gadgettes 149: The single-purpose gadgets episode

OK. So we promised you on last week's episode that we would do a single-purpose gadgets episode this week. Turns out, promising that type of thing in advance isn't such a good idea as we actually had to work to find gadgets that fit the theme. So we made it, but admittedly by the skin of our collective teeth. It's all worth it for the segments, though. Patience, young grasshopper!
