Crave giveaway: A gaggle of back-to-school gifts

Congrats to James A. of Mtn. Home, Idaho, for winning last week's giveaway, a Braven 625s Bluetooth speaker, speakerphone, and device charger.

All around us, it's back-to-school time, and this week's giveaway is here to help you and yours get back in the scholastic swing. First things first, there's that waking-up-early thing. Our prize package includes an Edifier Tick Tock Dock Bluetooth alarm clock and iPhone/iPod docking system that looks like an old-style waker-upper, but delivers sound through the two speakers masquerading as retro bells.

Next up, a 16-inch portable LED monitor from AOC powered solely by USB. The device works with PCs or Macs and includes a built-in smart stand for landscape and portrait display. … Read more

CES: AOC announces new 3D display

LAS VEGAS--While 3D monitors have been around for a few years now, at CES 2011 we saw an even bigger 3D push than last year.

This week, both Samsung and LG introduced new 3D monitors, each using their own proprietary 3D technology, and now AOC has unveiled its 2436wz; a 23.6-inch monitor with 120Hz 3D support.

The monitor also includes VGA, DVI, and USB 2.0 ports.

No pricing or release date info has been confirmed yet by AOC.

CES: AOC shows 0.3-inch thick monitor

LAS VEGAS--It appears the ultrathin monitor wars have begun. At CES this week, LG showed off its 0.28-inch thick E2290V monitor. And not to be outdone--or at least in an attempt to not be outdone--AOC revealed its i2352Fh monitor with a 0.37 profile length.

It is not quite as thin as LG's offering, but is still thinner than anything else we've yet seen in monitors.

The 23.6-inch AOC monitor is, however, wall-mountable--unlike the E2290V, as far as we could tell. Also, the AOC comes with two HDMI ports.

No pricing or release date info has … Read more

AOC Breeze Android tablet, under $200, has USB 2.0

Apple's iPad has a lot of things going for it, but ports aren't one of them. The ever-more-crowded tablet landscape is getting a number of intriguing Android products, and the AOC Breeze 8-inch tablet, announced this morning, is yet another one. What the 8-inch Android 2.1-running device does have of note is a full USB 2.0 port. Another advantage: it costs less than $200.

An 800x600-pixel display, 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi, 4GB of flash memory, Rockchip processor, and microSD card slot aren't exciting, and the system doesn't really stand out at first glance, … Read more

Full review: AOC e2243Fw

The future is now. Earlier this year I saw "2001: A Space Odessey" in its entirety for the first time (I know, extremely late to the party). One of the details of that incredibly detailed film that caught my eye was the particular aesthetic of all the "future" tech, all of which had a clean and, at times, soft look to it.

The first thing that struck me when I opened the AOC e2243Fw's box was how much it reminded me of "2001." There probably wasn't an electronic device in the film … Read more

AOC's e2237Fwh reminiscent of Asus monitor

A few weeks ago I reviewed the Asus MS238H, whose claim to fame was its unique, circular foot stand. This week, I review a monitor that shares similar design touches with the Asus, the AOC e2237Fwh.

Although it doesn't include the wacky footstand found on the Asus--it instead uses a 4-inch shaft, resulting in a monitor that doesn't topple over nearly as easily--the AOC e2237Fwh shares many of the same design touches.

It's like a transparent version of the Asus, with more connection options, a more robust onscreen display, and no weird, newfangled contraptions increases the display'… Read more

AOC debuts new all-in-one PCs

LAS VEGAS--As I said before, in the current economy it pays, hopefully, to branch out. While AOC has been primarily a computer monitor focused company, it did release the M222A all-in-one desktop last year. This week at CES, the company showed off its new all-in-one offering, the M92 series and a follow up to the M222A, the M222T.

The M92 is a 19-inch all-in-one PC with an integrated Intel Atom N270 processor, built-in Webcam, and speakers. It also comes with a 4-in-1 card reader, four USB ports, and Super Multi DVD.

The M222T has an ungraded CPU (Intel T4200 versus … Read more

AOC debuts new LED monitor, HDTV

LAS VEGAS--A few months back, I reviewed the AOC V22 Verfino monitor. While it lacked a DVI input and ergonomic features, I gave it points for its good performance, thin design, and useful extras.

It's too early to say whether AOC's V22 follow up, the E2237Fwh will live up to its predecessor--that will be determined when I get a review unit--hopefully in a few weeks. Unfortunately, AOC didn't increase the number DVI ports on the E2237Fwh from the zero found on the V22. Its sole video connection is HDMI, as it was with the V22.

Another week, another LED-based monitor review

The LED revolution has truly begun. In the last month or so, we've reviewed three LED-based LCD computer monitors, and we expect that they won't be the last.

Last week, we looked at the LG Flatron W2386L. It's an LED-based monitor that, while offering great game performance and a thin design, could not compare performancewise to the current LED king, the Samsung SyncMaster XL2370.

This week, we reviewed the AOC V22 LED monitor. Unlike many recent monitors, this one has a 16:10 aspect ratio instead of 16:9, Also, it has an extremely glossy screen--like "… Read more

LG W2486L approaches great

I reviewed the Samsung SyncMaster XL2370 a few weeks back. (BTW, that monitor is slated to be released at Best Buy on October 12, if you're interested.) Since then, it seems the floodgates have been blown wide open when it comes to LED-backlit monitors.

Thursday, we posted a review of the LG W2486L, an LED monitor that has a similarly minimalist design to the XL2370--albeit with a not-quite-as-sleepy sensibility. Also, I just got the AOC V22 (a 22-inch 16:10 LED monitor) in and will soon be receiving a couple LED BenQ monitors.

So yeah, it's likely that … Read more
