Microsoft SkyDrive aiming to outcloud iCloud

Microsoft is targeting a host of improvements for SkyDrive, potentially giving iCloud and similar services some healthy competition.

The next version, dubbed SkyDrive Wave 5, could lead the way, with several features revealed by blogging site LiveSide.net.

Tipped off about "new features that are said to be coming to SkyDrive soon," the site detailed such items as support for the OpenDocument format and the ability to store and manage BitLocker recovery keys on SkyDrive.

Box.net wants a developer army 100K strong

Box.net announced today a project called Box Innovation Network, which taps into developer communities and cloud technology partners to encourage development of enterprise software. The goal is to create a "vibrant ecosystem" for enterprise like Facebook did for social.

That's ambitious. A network for cloud-based software isn't nearly as spine-tingling as a new social network.

"Nothing will be cooler [than Facebook] for sharing photos with my grandmother and this isn't as sexy as daily deals," says Aaron Levie, the energetic CEO and founder of Box.net (now going by "Box"). &… Read more

Add downloadable files to your LinkedIn profile

If you're seeking employment, LinkedIn is useful for finding job openings, building your professional network, and posting your resume in hopes of discovery. Completing all the elements of your LinkedIn profile will give you an advantage, but there's also an extra (and little-known) feature to enable.

While LinkedIn allows recruiters to download an automated PDF version of your profile, the formatting is often jumbled and lacks the finesse of a carefully formatted resume. There also isn't a streamlined way for recruiters and people in your network to view samples of your work.

To solve this problem, Box.… Read more

AVG launches cloud-based storage service

Security firm AVG is doubling down on cloud storage.

The company today announced LiveKive, a service that allows people to upload data to the cloud that can then be downloaded to other computers or Android- and iOS-based devices with the LiveKive mobile app. It works on both Windows and Mac.

In either case, people can upload files, folder, and multimedia content. The service also supports automatic syncing for those who don'… Read more

Box.net on iPad becomes a presentation projector

Box.net announced an update to its Box.net for iPad app today, and it's one that could make you leave behind your laptop come your next off-site meeting or business trip.

In fact, four new features join the iOS app for in-the-cloud business collaboration. The first is single sign-on, a convenience that allows you to log in once to connect Box, Google Apps, and PingFederate. Next, there's now iPad locking and auto-locking to add an extra security layer to Box's app.

Third, tapping a button in the top right corner of the app pulls up an … Read more

Box.net bumps free, paid storage capacities

Following Moore's Law, data storage continues to get speed and capacity boosts at quite a clip--all the while coming down in cost and physical size. One business benefiting from that trend is Web storage and collaboration service Box.net. The amount of data the company once got for their money back in 2005 is now five times larger and takes up considerably less space, the company says.

As a result, Box.net this morning is putting out big changes to its offerings that give users more overall storage. Beginning with the personal plan (which is free), users now get … Read more

Tap That App: Get your files anywhere (video)

SugarSync, Dropbox, and Box.net all have several things in common. They're freemium cloud-syncing services that let you upload files to download again elsewhere; they all have free apps for BlackBerry, iPhone, and Android smartphones; and they're all featured in this week's episode of Tap That App.

Check out our video to see how one of these apps could solve your storage problems.

Box.net arrives on Android devices

Online storage and collaboration service Box.net is finally available on Android devices.

The free app, which hit the Android market today, does just about everything Box does on the iPhone and iPad, with a few added tricks. It can, for instance, now let you search for your files by name, and if a user is a business customer, it will even search the content found within those files.

Box's CEO and co-founder Aaron Levie told CNET earlier this week the same search feature would be coming to the iOS flavor of Box's apps, but he said Android … Read more

Box iPad/iPhone apps to get offline, iOS4 support

Online collaboration service Box.net is pushing out an update to its iPhone and iPad app that should make its business users happy. The software is getting offline file storage, which in a call with CNET on Monday, Box's CEO and co-founder Aaron Levie said had been the most requested feature by Box users.

Files that are flagged to be saved to the device can be accessed even when users aren't near a data connection, which Levie cited as a frequent occurrence for Box users on the Wi-Fi-only version of the iPad. Box has also built an updating … Read more
