Friday Poll: Got a name for HTC's next phone?

This week, on its Facebook page, Taiwan-based handset vendor HTC asked fans for help naming its next phone.

Since the Razr and the iPhone, manufacturers are thankfully giving their handsets real names instead of monikers like the T4-839i or the 4Fgi0s319zl3 or the EIEIO.

Instead, we get names like the Glide and the Touch. Much better.

Now it's your turn to help. To the right are the names HTC fans can vote on (Jovi, Zeal, Wildfire, or Festi), and we encourage you to go do so. But just for good measure, we've thrown in a few ideas of … Read more

Help HTC pick a name for its next phone

It's funny. I was just IMing with my dear colleague Jasmine France this morning about how companies come up with product names (spurred on by the Droid Incredible announcement) when I stumbled upon this Engadget Mobile article.

HTC is turning to its fans for help with picking out a name for a new device the company is cooking up in the lab and posted a poll on its Facebook page. Unfortunately, there are no details about the new phone, but you can choose from one of possible names: Jovi, Zeal, Wildfire, or Festi. We're not particular fans of … Read more

HTC and Verizon officially announce Droid Incredible

After an early slip up, HTC and Verizon Wireless officially introduced HTC's latest Android smartphone on Thursday, the Droid Incredible.

The Droid Incredible will hit stores on April 29 for $199.99 with a two-year contract and after a $100 mail-in rebate. It runs Android 2.1 and the latest version of HTC Sense. The latter includes such features as a new Leap screen where you can view thumbnail versions of all seven home screens for easy switching, a FriendStream widget, and group contacts. All should run smoothly given the smartphone's 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.

Buzz Out Loud 1206: Lies, damn lies, and AT&T's lies

You would not believe the rants in this episode ... coming out of Tom. No, seriously. Something about AT&T's ongoing attempts to have their anti-regulation cake and eat your Universal Service Fund fees, too just sends him into a frothing fury. Plus, there's rage to burn on the U.S. government reporting that there are essentially zero facts or evidence to back up claims of billions of dollars in losses due to digital piracy.

Verizon teases HTC Incredible, coming April 29

For weeks, we've seen signs of the imminent release of the HTC Incredible on Verizon and on Wednesday, we pretty much got all but an official confirmation.

For a brief moment, Verizon published a teaser site for the Incredible, officially dubbed the Droid Incredible, and learned that the availability date would be April 29. It appears the page is now requiring a username and password, but not before we and other tech blogs, including Engadget Mobile and Phone Scoop, grabbed a screenshot of it.

Pricing details and specs were not revealed at this time, though you can tell from … Read more

What I want from the Evo 4G

Excuse me for being a little anxious, but I can't wait for the HTC Evo 4G to go on sale. I got to handle Sprint's first WiMax cell phone at CTIA last month and liked what I saw immediately. Sure, you can argue that its hardware isn't so different from the HTC HD2, but that doesn't take away from the Evo 4G's stunning display, sleek design, and high-end features. And more than just being Sprint's first 4G phone, it's also the first 4G phone from any big U.S carrier.

So yes, I'm excited, but I also believe in having realistic expectations. Though the Evo 4G stands to be a very good phone, I'll be disappointed if I assume that it will be the greatest phone ever. I also know that a lot can happen between the time a phone is announced and when it's introduced, which is why I offer Sprint some advice. I know, "Sprint, don't screw it up," (my last tip), isn't very helpful, so I'll be more specific this time.

T-Mobile MyTouch Slide details and pictures emerging

As we mentioned last weekend, the T-Mobile MyTouch Slide appears to be on the fast-track for a mid-May release. A handful of leaked photos have appeared recently online, indicating production-ready phones are being used and tested.

The latest batch of pictures coming out of TmoNews shows a handset running Android 2.1 with the Espresso build of the HTC Sense user interface. This would be T-Mobile's first Android handset with 2.1 at launch.

While it may not be on the same level of sexiness as other HTC offerings like the Legend and Desire, the MyTouch Slide should have … Read more

Report: Palm putting itself up for sale

Palm is putting itself on the block and starting its search for bidders as early as this week, according to Bloomberg.

Who is on the short list of potential buyers? It's not Google, but close enough: HTC. That makes sense because buying Palm could save HTC in Apple's patent infringement lawsuit. How? HTC may find in Palm the patent portfolio and thus the leverage it would need to settle the suit.

Bloomberg said that Lenovo may want to buy Palm too. However, the most interesting bidder by far is HTC.

Apart from Apple and Google, Palm--which currently has … Read more

T-Mobile updates one handset, preps for another

After a handful of missteps and false starts, another over-the-air update for the Motorola Cliq has started rolling out. It's not the Android 2.1 update that many are hoping for, but it is a minor maintenance release with generally undetectable changes.

Designed to improve features like battery life, widget response, GPS, Bluetooth, and touch-screen sensitivity, version 1.4.8 should hit all Cliq handsets this weekend. You should also see fewer "force close" error messages and you'll get support for a couple of new elements, notably .WMA and WAV audio files and Microsoft Office 2007 … Read more
