On Thursday, Instagram released a what appeared to be a rather mundane update to its Android and iOS apps. Reading the release notes you'd think the update only addressed various bugs. The company later announced by a tweet from the Instagram account, it was revealed the update also included new controls for video playback in your timeline. While the update was announced for both Android and iOS at the same time, the Android update has yet to hit the Google Play Store.
Activision Blizzard, publisher of Call of Duty and World of Warcraft, has won a key ruling in its bid to buy out Vivendi's share in the game company.
The Delaware Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that Activision Blizzard could commence the $5.83 billion stock-buyback plan it announced earlier this year without first getting approval from shareholders. According to Bloomberg, which was first to report on the ruling, Chief Justice Myron Steele determined that a shareholder vote was not necessary, since the deal "is not a merger, business combination, or similar transaction."

Hulu might soon have a new, permanent CEO.
The streaming-video company is currently in talks with Fox Networks Group president of distribution Mike Hopkins to be its next chief executive, Reuters reported on Thursday, citing people who claim to have knowledge of Hulu's plans.
Hulu, which is owned by Fox, Walt Disney Co., and Comcast, has been searching for a new chief executive since earlier this year when former CEO Jason Kilar announced his resignation. Andy Forssell has been filling in for Hulu as its interim CEO until a replacement is named.
Hulu declined CNET's request for comment.… Read more
Without a lot of fanfare, Instagram updated both its Android and iOS apps on Thursday. The updates bring new video features to both apps and add photo straightening to the Android app -- something the iOS app had for months.
Besides getting photo straightening, the Android app also has been updated with "new sound and data usage controls for Instagram videos." The same goes … Read more
When design firm Ideo creates a gadget or comes up with a concept, it's usually pretty interesting -- remember Apple's first mouse? Rather than going for the million-dollar cash-in or making a banal consumer product, Ideo seems to be more of the creative type.
A new project the firm has been working on is an iPhone video app called Spark Camera. While there are already tons of video apps out there -- like Viddy, 8mm, and not to mention social media apps like Snapchat and Instagram that feature video -- Ideo's app is a bit different.

There are some things you won't readily admit, aren't there?
You occasionally have difficult thoughts involving Ryan Reynolds, Zeppelins, and clockwork mice.
Sometimes, you fantasize about walking into work in only your underwear and singing the French national anthem.
And then there's your predilection for sniffing people as they walk by.
But we've all reached the stage where we're prepared to admit that, very occasionally, we have viewed uplifting material of an adult nature on our portable devices. Haven't we?… Read more
SAN FRANCISCO -- Greg Duffy is beaming.
The 27-year-old CEO of Dropcam, the maker of a video camera that streams to the Internet 24 hours a day, is holding a shrink-wrapped box containing the next major version of that device.
On it is a simple front and side shot of the all-black camera on a white background. On the back of the box are the words "Designed by Dropcam in California. Assembled in China." It's a not-so-subtle homage to Apple. In fact, from across the room, the camera could be mistaken for an Apple product.

DivX isn't just a powerful video converter, but a stylish universal video player as well. It can convert and play just about any video file you want and gives you plenty of advanced control over your product. Though some of its features are locked behind a paywall, it is worthy enough to be your sole conversion program.
In addition to a custom browser toolbar, this program's installation has a search page and home page takeover attached to the download. It tries to force you to accept one or the other, which is annoying. The program includes a video … Read more
For the past five years I have been patiently waiting for the day when my son is mature enough to experience "Star Wars." Well, to be completely honest, I probably started the countdown when he was still in the womb.
The timing is critical. Too soon, and Darth Vader will inspire night terrors for years to come. Too late, and one of his blabbermouth friends at school will spill the beans on Luke's paternity test.
So we're working up to it, and with any luck someday soon his tiny brain will be imprinted with the opening … Read more
