Hallo, Germany: Nexus 4 back in stock in country's Google store

Google's Nexus 4 smartphone is back in stock in the Google Play Store in Germany, making it one of the few locations where people can currently order the phone.

A Google spokeswoman told CNET the device became available in the European country this morning. She declined to provide details about future availability in other regions.

The LG Nexus 4 has been selling out pretty rapidly since its November launch, with consumers forced to wait many weeks for the device to ship or to even show availability online. The smartphone is one developed closely with Google, giving a pure and … Read more

Yes, LG will continue to make cheap plasma TVs

LG's 2013 plasma lineup is smaller than last year's, but the company is still making the non-LCD TVs. In addition to the sole top-end plasma, the 60-inch 60PH6700, there will be a pair of step-down series that lack Smart TV and 3D. As usual pricing was not announced, but these are bound to be among the least expensive televisions in their respective classes.

One will encompass two sizes, the 50-inch 50PN6500 and the 60-inch 60PN6500. Its main features are 1080p resolution and a new "Hair Line" bezel, which we assume means a thinner frame around the … Read more

LG's flagship LED TV with onboard camera

LG announced a pair of five-figure TVs already, one OLED and another 4K, but among models mortals can afford, its flagship 2013 series of LED-based LCD TVs is the LA8600.

Unlike last year's LM9600 flagship, the LA8600 will forgo a full-array local dimming backlight in favor of an edge-lit variety. While that seems disappointing from a videophile perspective, it's worth noting that the LM9600 was among the worst-performing full-array LED TVs we'd ever tested.

Available in a 60- and 55-inch size, it will feature all of the latest tricks including an onboard, retractable camera. LG initially told … Read more

NFC: Not just for mobile payments anymore

Move over, mobile payments. NFC is finding other ways to make itself useful.

In fact, paying for items with one's phone seems to be the least common use for the close-range connectivity technology right now, at least based on gadgets unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show. Rather, essentially all products using NFC shown at the recent confab employed the technology in one of two ways: To set up a sort of digital handshake between a mobile device and another gadget or as a way to share information between products with just a tap.

"NFC really simplifies things," … Read more

LG's Ultra HD set: 300 sold... and counting?

If a report out of Korea is to be believed, LG's 84-inch Ultra HD television isn't exactly setting the industry on fire with its sales.

According to news site Chosun Ilbo, LG has sold about 300 units of its high-end television. The company's monthly sales have averaged about 70 of the TVs since the product's launch last year.

So, why might sales be so underwhelming? Price may have something to do with it. LG is currently selling its 84-inch Ultra HD set for about $20,000.

Ultra HD technology took center stage at the Consumer Electronics … Read more
