I'M IN UR INTERWEBS, BAITIN UR LINKS

Hey, kids, you remember Mike Elgan, dontcha? He's the gelatinous hunk of wadded up Kraft Singles that Computerworld employs as a columnist.

Right, right! That Mike Elgan.

The last we saw Mike he was arguing that the Zune scares Apple to the core (get it? Core?! Ha-ha-ha!).

What's that, dear reader?

Oh, the Zune.

Zune.

Z. U. N. E.

It's Microsoft's iPod killer.

Um... no, ZUNE.

C'mon, surely you remember the Zune. It's like the Foleo without the refreshing sense of honesty.

Well, it doesn't matter. What does matter is how laugh-out-loud (LOL … Read more

Free your ring, and your iPhone will follow

Here's some exciting news for those of you who have an iPhone and want to have the Star Wars Imperial March play every time your mother-in-law asks you for help installing the latest sudoku game: with a bit of file-extension tweaking and judicious use of the new iTunes 7.4 for Windows or Mac, you can now customize your ringtones without having to donate another 99 cents to Steve Jobs' favorite retirement fund.

Report: TV execs dislike idea of price cuts at iTunes

Apple is trying to convince Hollywood to reduce prices of downloads of TV shows from $1.99 to 99 cents, according to a story in Variety.

The trade publication reported Friday that TV networks have shown little enthusiasm to price cutting, although Apple is telling them that lowering the cost will boost sales, according to the story.

Last week, NBC Universal announced that it would not renew a long-term contract with Apple to sell TV shows via iTunes. Many in the entertainment sector have wanted more control in pricing their products at iTunes, but Apple CEO Steve Jobs has held … Read more

Apple issues security update for iTunes

Apple on Thursday morning issued a security update for iTunes. The update is for users of Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.7 or later and Windows XP and Vista. It addresses a vulnerability identified in CVE-2007-3752.

According to Apple, opening a maliciously crafted music file may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution. Specifically, a buffer overflow exists in the way that iTunes processes album cover art. By enticing a user to open a maliciously crafted music file, an attacker may trigger the overflow, which may lead to an unexpected application … Read more

What Apple didn't announce

Wednesday's Apple announcements included some significant market advances, particularly the iPod Touch and the iTunes Wi-Fi Store. The new lineup of devices should keep the company clearly in the digital-media drivers' seat through the end of 2007, at least, and the pricing strategy is rock-solid. (Microsoft tried to pre-empt Apple's announcement with a $50 price cut on the 30GB Zune to $199, but with an 80GB iPod available for only $249, Microsoft's going to have to cut the price further.)

Even so, a few things that Apple didn't announce might leave some room for other innovators. … Read more

First Look: New Apple iPod Nano

At less than $200, the new 4GB and 8GB iPod Nanos will surely be the most popular tech stocking stuffer this year. While the updated iPod Classic and iPod Touch are equally drool-worthy, the new Nano is obviously priced to move.

I was fortunate enough to get some hands-on time with the all the new iPods at the launch event, and even though the iPod Touch is clearly the star of the show, the new Nano is really the one to watch for. The 2-inch screen packs a dense and crisp 320x240 video resolution that looks very nice. The revamped graphic user interface (shared with the iPod Classic) is graphically rich and uses both a Cover Flow method for browsing music content, as well as a split-screen view used for browsing music, videos, photos, and more.

There's lots of small touches included on the new Nano that are easy to miss. For instance, Apple's music shuffle function has evolved. With this latest generation of iPods, after launching the player's shuffle function, users can now access the shuffle mode settings (shuffle song/shuffle album/shuffle off) from within the Now Playing pane by pressing the center button four times. This might seem insignificant, but it effectively gives users the ability to steer the shuffle function--randomizing song selections until they find something they like, then effortlessly disengaging the shuffle function once they've found an artist or album they'd like to hear more from. Accomplishing the same effect using… Read more

Price cut side effect: cheaper refurbished iPhones

Today's oh-so-sweet $200 price cut on the iPhone had a nice little side effect. Those refurbished 8GB iPhones sold exclusively through Apple's special deals section that were on sale for $499 last month have been given the price cut treatment, as well, although only by $50 this time around, bringing the grand total down to $349 for an (almost) brand new iPhone. If you're looking to save $50 on an iPhone to spend on some music to fill it up using the new iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store, this is a pretty sweet deal while supplies last. Keep … Read more

Capturing the excitement

It's all over but the shouting and it looks like Apple's hit another home run. No Beatles, but Apple did announce:

Roll-your-own ringtones for 99 cents. The "fat" nano, a squarish nano with coverflow and video. 4 GB for $149, 8 GB for $199. Higher capacity "classic" iPods. 80 GB for $249 and 160 GB for $349. The new iPod Touch, which is basically an iPhone without the phone. $299 for 8 GB and $399 for 16 GB. Coming in a couple of weeks. A version of the iTunes Store for both the iPod … Read more

iTunes adds ringtones

At a special event in San Francisco today, Apple's Steve Jobs announced that a new version of iTunes (download for Windows or Mac; CNET review) will allow users to create their own ringtones from more than 500,000 songs in the iTunes store. The ringtones will cost 99 cents, in addition to the price of the songs themselves. The custom ringtones can last up to 30 seconds and can be created from any section of a song.

The new version of iTunes, expected later tonight, will eventually add a bell icon next to songs in the iTunes store that … Read more

Instant reactions to Apple announcements

I'm following the special "Beat Goes On" event being put on by Apple this morning in San Francisco's Moscone Center. Here are my first reactions....

Do-it-yourself ringtones for the iPhone. Great idea, but I want to be able to do it with any song in my iTunes library, not just songs I've purchased from iTunes. And only 500,000 songs are approved for this usage. And you have to pay an additional $0.99 per ringtone, in addition to buying the song. Kind of a snooze. I've seen people hack together custom ringtones from … Read more
