Virgin Mobile has begun taking preorders for its next smartphone, the Gingerbread-powered PCD Venture.

The Venture is an affordable option for customers looking to scoop up their first Android device; it features a 2.8-inch display, a 600MHz processor, 512MB of RAM, and microSD expansion slot (for cards up to a 2GB). Taking a peek at the user manual reveals that the internal storage is 512MB and the digital camera 2 megapixels. While seasoned users might not get excited over the hardware, I suspect that both will matter little to the target user base.

Sprint is just days away from announcing its next Android smartphone, according to details picked up by SprintFeed.

According to the blog, the ZTE Fury is set to arrive on March 11 with a wallet-friendly $19.99 price tag and a two-year commitment. If you hear the price and expect low-end hardware then you'd be right; this ain't no superphone.

BARCELONA, Spain--Chinese vendors Huawei and ZTE were hoping to make an impression at Mobile World Congress about their presence in the smartphone world.

Well, mission accomplished.

BARCELONA, Spain--The first and second days of Mobile World Congress certainly flew by in a whirlwind of smartphone product announcements.

While the torrent of press conferences and gadget news abated a bit, Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt notably took the stage at MWC. Schmidt rallied the Android troops touting the exponential growth of the mobile OS while calling for less censorship and increased access to high-tech services saying, "Technology is a leveler. BARCELONA, Spain--Intel has unveiled a number of new partnerships and chips as the company, which is dominant in the PC business, attempts to find the same success with mobile devices.

Intel said today it is working with ZTE, Lava International, and Orange on handsets, and with Visa on a multiyear partnership to build a mobile-payment service together. It also unveiled a trio of new Atom chips to fill out its mobile-centric product portfolio.
