iPod speakers that are made for snorkling

If you can't afford a media-laden ocean cruiser but still enjoy your music by (or in) the sea, here's a modest alternative.

Ego is coming out with a waterproof iPod case that, unlike countless other water-resistant models, includes a set of speakers that stays dry too. The "iceBar2" is an updated version of a case introduced last year to fit the latest Nano.

And unlike speakers that are meant for bathroom dwellers and the like, this one and its shatterproof polycarbonate case can be submerged in up to 3 meters of water, according to Coolest-Gadgets, which … Read more

Panasonic SW20 takes a soaking and keeps on shooting

Panasonic just revealed a new waterproof, shockproof, and dustproof compact camcorder at today's CES press conference. According to Panasonic, the new SW20 can handle dunks in up to 5 feet of water, drops from up to 4 feet, and will keep most dust out of its pint-size, colorful casing.

Though Panasonic has been producing its rugged Toughbooks for several years now, its camcorders have had this persistent quirk of breaking if you drop them several feet or submerge them in water. The SW20 is the first rugged, waterproof camcorder I've seen so far from Panasonic (last year's … Read more

Waterproof MP3 radio shuns corners

Something of a novelty only a year ago, devices that waterproof the iPod are almost too many to count today. But we're willing to give credit to the "iConcepts Shower Radio" for originality of design if nothing else.

The oval-shaped dock will work with other MP3 players as well, according to 7Gadgets, as long as they fit in the space behind the mirror. But in case you have any thoughts of using it as a Christmas tree ornament, be aware that it weighs 3 pounds. If you paint it green, though, it might pass for toy grenade.… Read more

Waterproof TVs go portable

There's an abundance of waterproof TVs on the market, for both outdoor and indoor use. But there are suprisingly few handheld entertainment devices that can resist the rain, considering that they're actually supposed to get wet.

Sanyo has the right idea, though, with a waterproof portable TV that has a 4-inch LCD and a six-hour battery, according to Gizmodiva. That, of course, is tiny compared with other weather-resistant models we've seen. Then again, not everyone needs one for an entire life in the bathroom.

The latest TV combo: waterproof and mirrors

There are a number of TVs on the market that are waterproof and others that have mirrored screens, but now we have one that combines both. The "Luxurite Wireless Waterproof TV" is a high-definition set that comes in 17 or 19 inches with an optional mirrored finish that appears when it's turned off. The U.K.-made TV can be used outdoors as well as indoors, Trendir says, and its remote is waterproof as well--but you'll pay the price for that durability, to the tune of $4,161. Even though it would be perfect by the … Read more

Headphones that won't get you electrocuted

Spending an entire life in the bathroom can at times be a perilous journey. In the shower, for example, the simple act of washing one's hair can have dangerous consequences when an electronic device is mistaken for the shampoo.

That's where the "Euphonia" headset from BainUltra can be especially handy, a set of waterproof headphones that connects wirelessly to a companion MP3 player mounted on the wall, according to Trendir. The system, which is scheduled for release in December, doesn't have a price tag yet. However, as we saw with the inexpensive but unsightly shower knob radio, … Read more

A speaker that fits in next to the shampoo

As more people seem determined to spend their entire lives in the bathroom, gadget makers are responding in kind with products that fit in with the decor of tile and plumbing.

The latest example is a waterproof iPod speaker from a Taiwanese company called Nova. Gizmodo says it can either sit on a shelf or hang from the shower head in a way that "suggests a playful life attitude," to quote the company.

But if you're partial to baths instead of showers, you may need one more thing to go with it: a splashproof remote.

Sony's 'water pit' for laptop spills

Say what you will about Sony computers, but they've always been at least a finalist in laptop version of The Biggest Loser--the most recent lightweight contender being the first to break the 2-pound barrier with its Vaio G series. Yet the latest upgrade to that line apparently has a feature that has little to do with weight but is extremely close to home for some of the less coordinated road warriors among us.

According to Engadget, the G series now has a waterproofing function that discharges your spilled Red Bull or chai latte through a "water pit&… Read more

DVD player won't get waterlogged

Stationing a waterproof TV outside has got to be the height of impracticality. Not only do you have to deal with the long-term effects of the elements, but you'd always need to reposition it (or yourself) to avoid the glare.

But a splashproof portable DVD player, now that's a different story. We're still not convinced of the need to watch video outdoors unless you have a private beach in Malibu or Maui, but at least you can take this player inside with you when it rains. The "DVD Zabady" also plays MP4 clips and MP3s … Read more

Waterproof remote for the spa lifestyle

It's a truly sad commentary on society when something like waterproof remotes become a trend. Thank goodness the Soviet Union isn't still around, or its propagandists would be having a field day with images of bourgeois Westerners lounging around by the pool, too lazy to leave the chaise lounge to change channels on the splashproof TV.

Yet Remote Technologies has taken the concept to new heights with its RTI U2 model, which not only sports a LCD screen with drag-and-drop icons but also can "trigger advanced commands such as SPA TIME, where the lights dim and your … Read more
