Top 5 Under the Radar media startups

Josh and I spent last Thursday at the Under the Radar event on entertainment and new media. At this event, 32 really interesting companies pitched to the usual crowd of venture capitalists, journalists, and potential partners and acquirers. There were gaming startups, virtual worlds operators, music streamers, and more. We picked our top five companies from the list; see the video for the results.

Check out our full coverage of the event (courtesy of Josh and News.com's Greg Sandoval; I was busy moderating), and stay tuned for a video of the keynote speaker, MTV's EVP Jeff Yapp. … Read more

Top 5 Apple flops

Before you Apple fans start sending me nasty e-mail, remember the context. With the überpopularity of the iPod, the success of the Intel Macs, and the overwhelming hype surrounding the iPhone, Apple has been riding high for a while.

That hasn't always been the case, however, and Tom Merritt counts down the five biggest Apple flops to prove it.

If you disagree with any of Tom's picks or have an idea for a Top 5 of your own, be sure to let me know about it in the comments.

Ringtone roundup: Top 5 are frozen in time

Each week, Crave tracks the most popular ringtones.

For all we know, the top five ringtones may be cemented in place for all of eternity. The same 10 ringtones make up the top 10 this week, except a few have switched places.

See the full Billboard ringtone chart right here.

Elsewhere on the charts, Koji Kondo's "Super … Read more

Top 5 from Web 2.0 Expo

The first Web 2.0 Expo is behind us, and it was a good show. In addition to dozens of interesting panels (including, if I do say so, mine), there were about 115 companies presenting on a crowded expo show floor, and six interesting company presentations during the "Launchpad" sessions that ran on Monday and Tuesday.

With Webware.com's Josh Lowensohn and News.com's Erica Ogg, we picked our Top 5 Web 2.0 services from the conference. They are:

I just didn't know what to say about this picture that I found on the MAKE magazine blog. It kind of left me speechless. In fact, the only thing I was able to do was come up with a title for the post. Five titles, in fact. So, here's what I'd start off with if I weren't wholly without words regarding this...brilliant idea.

5. Guard against the bogeyman with a Tiger. Rarrr.

4. Bring iLife into your nightlife. Literally.

3. Make your nightmares about Bill Gates go away forever!

2. Ever wanted to know what … Read more

Top 5 names for the alcohol-detecting ankle bracelet

A Colorado company called Alcohol Monitoring System has created an ankle bracelet that weighs only half a pound and makes hourly BAC checks. According to Gizmowatch, 4,000 people are already wearing these bracelets, one of whom may or may not be your cranky, Jim Beam-loving neighbor. This way, authorities can keep tabs on repeat offenders and make sure they aren't getting behind any steering wheels. It's being used as part of a program that goes by the fantastic acronym of SCRAM (Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitoring).

But there's one thing this gadget's missing: a cool … Read more
