Get a one-year Boomerang for Gmail subscription for $39.99

If you're anything like me, your inbox doubles as a kind of to-do list. You mark important messages as unread so you remember to attend to them later.

Just one problem: As more e-mail arrives, those unread messages get pushed farther down the list, until they're eventually out of sight -- and out of mind.

What you need is something akin to a snooze button, a way to delay important messages to a later time or date so they reappear when you're ready to attend to them.

Something like Boomerang for Gmail, a browser add-on that gives … Read more

How to set up Google's two-step verification

Did you read Mat Honan's tale of woe last week? The one where his Amazon, Apple, Gmail, and Twitter accounts were hacked and his digital life was eradicated?

If not, I strongly encourage you to read his story. In a nutshell, hackers strung together pieces of information to gain access to several important online accounts. The results were personally devastating for him. But his story is a good lesson for all of us. After learning the details of the attack -- from one of the hackers himself, no less -- Honan says he regrets three things most of all.… Read more

Add notes to Gmail messages in Chrome

When your e-mail inbox starts filling up it, it becomes more difficult to keep track of what you need to do for each message you've received. Maybe you need to get verification on a work contract, add a reminder to call Grandma Betty about one of her famous recipes, or follow up with someone once you have more information. Unfortunately, Gmail doesn't offer a solid feature to add notes like these.

You might be thinking: what about drafts? The issue with creating a draft is the possibility of sending said draft. This could cause issues with personal or … Read more

Opt-in to Google's Account Chooser for easier multiple account log-ins

"YES!" was my out-loud reaction to Google's latest update to its multiple account sign-in feature. Currently an opt-in tool, new Account Chooser simplifies the login process, greatly reducing the number of times you have to re-enter your usernames and passwords throughout the day.

First spotted by The Next Web, the Account Chooser applies to both personal accounts and Google Apps, and works with most popular Google services, like YouTube, Gmail, and Google Plus.

With the Account Chooser enabled, the sign in screen will display all of your Google accounts, accompanied by their respective profile photos. Meaning, you'… Read more

Google working on Gmail issues for Apple users

A number of users are reporting problems accessing Gmail on their iPhone or iPad.

According to AllthingsD, users have been receiving error messages along the lines of "mail service imap.gmail.com is not responding" when trying to log in to Gmail on their iOS devices.

Google is apparently aware of the issue, and in its Gmail forum, a company representative has tried to offer users a work-around:

We are aware of the issue and we are working to resolve for the accounts affected.

For users that may have joined this thread after my posts (they are at … Read more

Apple responds to journalist's iCloud hack

After former Gizmodo reporter Mat Honan's entire digital presence was hacked via a loophole in AppleCare, Apple now says it is looking into how users can reset their account passwords to ensure that their data is protected.

It all began when Honan took to his Tumblr blog on Friday, detailing the events that led to his online life being sabotaged -- with his Google and Twitter accounts being deleted and his MacBook, iPad, and iPhone being wiped clean. He blamed an AppleCare technician for allowing his accounts to be hacked, as well as the tech blog's official feed.… Read more

Move your mail to Outlook.com

Multiple e-mail inboxes are a fact of life for most of us. At last count I had six mail accounts I access regularly and another six addresses I use occasionally.

That didn't prevent me from signing up for a new Outlook.com address when Microsoft announced the service last week.

At first I was disappointed that I wasn't able to transfer my existing Hotmail account to Outlook.com. Instead, I was prompted to link the new Outlook.com account with the existing Hotmail account.

However, once I had imported my Gmail to Microsoft's new service I was … Read more

Syncing Notes from Mountain Lion Macs to iOS and Android

One of the nice things about the new Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion release is that the Notes application makes it easy to have notes sync from your Mac to your iPhone or iPad. But what if you're an Android user or want your notes to flow outside the Apple ecosystem for some reason? Yes, it can be done.

I don't take a lot of notes, but I've found it handy to have some things like frequent flyer numbers jotted down digitally in an easy-to-locate format. As a longtime Outlook user, I've used Outlook'… Read more
