By now the drill is familiar. Apple rolls out the next iPhone. It has a few hardware upgrades that make it better, faster, and more feature rich. And then we wait and see what hardware features make it into the next iPads, which Apple should unveil in October if you believe all the rumors and leaks (yes, more unverified photos surfaced this week on Sonny Dickson's site).
Yesterday's iPhone event revealed nothing about new iPads, but if a new video is to be believed, there's an iPad Mini 2 waiting in Apple's wings -- and its feature set is definitely open to interpretation.
Unbox Therapy, which recently showed a very convincing-looking iPad 5 shell, claims to have the back plate that will house the iPad Mini 2. Like the white first-gen Mini, it sports an aluminum finish, but this time with a mirrored Apple logo -- same as the rumored iPad 5. Take a look:
The key takeaway, of course, is that the iPad … Read more
Apple could release the iPad Mini Retina this year as it faces a crush of high-resolution competition, an analyst said Wednesday.
Despite production challenges, a Retina version of the iPad Mini could land this year, according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. (Via MacRumors.)
The Retina version of the Mini -- particularly the display -- is proving difficult to manufacture in the very high volumes required by Apple, analysts have told CNET in the past -- leading some to conclude that a 2014 release is possible.
But Kuo believes that the new Mini "may be pulled in for [launch] … Read more
Don't expect a new iPad 5 or iPad Mini at the expected September 10 Apple event -- that's the consensus of Apple experts and observers. After rumors surface Wednesday claiming that new iPads would be announced alongside new iPhones, Apple blogs responded: No. 9to5Mac said that "it contradicts everything we've heard thus far about Apple's fall iOS Device launch plans from our sources." AppleInsider also chimed in: "Last year, the iPhone 5 was unveiled at a media event in September, while the iPad mini and fourth-generation iPad were introduced to the public in … Read more
The iPad Mini Retina is landing in the first quarter of 2014, while an iPhone 6 should arrive in the first half of next year, Citi Research reiterated in a note to investors. And, needless to say, Citi had something to say about more imminent iPhones (as well as the rumored iWatch).
In a note published late Monday night from Citi's Glen Yeung -- "Mini Retina a 2014 Event" -- the investment bank essentially confirmed what it said in June about the Mini Retina.
In our 6/7/13 note, we first indicated that the iPad Mini … Read more
Production of displays for the expected high-resolution version of the iPad Mini is at levels similar to last year's launch of the first-generation iPad Mini, IHS iSuppli told CNET.
"Based [what] we are seeing in the [production] pipeline...The volumes are similar to the iPad Mini that we saw in Q4 of last year," said Vinita Jakhanwal, director of mobile and emerging displays at IHS iSuppli, referring to display production.
The first-gen iPad Mini was launched last November.
The rumored Retina version of the iPad Mini is expected to use a 7.9-inch panel with a resolution … Read more
As Apple's plans for its "very busy fall" continue to take shape, the rumors are coming hot and heavy.
The latest: a complete revamp of the iPad line by Apple in the last three months of this year. That's according to Bloomberg, which on Monday said that Apple is working on both a new full-size iPad design that will look more like the iPad Mini, as well as an iPad Mini model with a Retina Display.
That claim of a newer display for the Mini -- which would presumably double the device's resolution while remaining … Read more
Samsung was expected to fade as a major Apple component supplier. But that's not happening. It is, rather, gaining on major Apple display supplier LGD, says NPD DisplaySearch.
Samsung supplied more 9.7-inch panels to Apple than LG Display (LGD) in April and June, according to a research note from NPD DisplaySearch. Panels measuring 9.7 inches are used on the iPad 4.
Apple, in fact, has been boosting purchases of displays from Samsung since January, according to the market analyst. Apple got about 2.3 million units from Samsung in the first quarter. That figure jumped about 80 … Read more
Maybe Apple should take its time on the iPad Mini Retina.
Last week I said Google trumped Apple with the release of the Nexus 7's eye-popping 323-pixel-per-inch display.
That's still true -- with a qualifier. After using the Nexus 7 for a week, I've discovered (or I should say it's been reinforced) that the relatively petite battery required by a sleek, small chassis means downsized battery life.
Especially when the device has a gorgeous display. Ultra-high-resolution displays are demanding. They typically need big batteries to keep all those pixels lit up.
Try this. If you have … Read more
It's August, and Apple hasn't released a new iPad or iPhone in 2013. That should change soon, but to what degree? Yes, we're expecting at least one new iPhone, and maybe a redesigned Retina iPad...but what about the iPad Mini?
For the past week, I've been using a Google Nexus 7. Until that point, I'd largely been an iPad Mini user. Apple's smaller tablet is easy to love. It's very portable, very versatile, and...it doesn't have a Retina Display.
The new Nexus 7 has a far superior resolution for its … Read more
