Get rid of the recent recipients list in Mail on iOS

When I started using the first iPhone, one of the biggest annoyances I can remember was the inability to delete the recently e-mailed list in the Mail app. If I had e-mailed someone on Craigslist, or replied to a newsletter to unsubscribe, the e-mail address was then stored on my iPhone indefinitely. Every time I began to compose an e-mail by entering a recipient, I would have to look at the recent list, full of e-mail addresses I'd never need again.

The only way to reset the recent list at that time was to restore your iPhone and set … Read more

Apple's monster Q1 earnings still fall short on Wall Street

Apple just reported its first quarter earnings, and they were huge, though they missed Wall Street's expectations.

The iPhone and iPad maker posted revenue of $54.5 billion and earnings of $13.1 billion, or $13.81 per share. That was just below the $54.7 billion and slightly above the earnings per share of $13.44 Wall Street was expecting, but above the $52 billion and $11.75 per share Apple forecast for itself back in October.

Apple sold 47.8 million iPhones during the quarter, which ended in December. Sales of the iPad came in at 22.… Read more

iPad Mini 2 to sport Retina Display, analyst says

Apple's next-generation iPad Mini will feature a high-resolution Retina Display, says KGI Securites analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

In an investors note detailed last night by MacRumors, Kuo projects that the iPad Mini 2 will come with the same Retina Display already offered by its larger counterpart.

The upgrade will be beneficial not only to consumers but to developers who can then design the same high-resolution apps to fit both iPad models. The next version of the 9.7-inch iPad will also lose some weight, get much slimmer, and take on the same thin bezels used on the Mini, according to … Read more

The worst app Apple ever made

Podcasts are all kinds of awesome. A Prairie Home Companion, This American Life, Wiretap, The Truth -- there's a virtually endless supply of great listening to be had free of charge.

Apple's Podcasts app, on the other hand, is all kinds of suck. It's so abysmal that I'm breaking my if-you-can't-say-anything-nice rule to vent my hatred of it. Ever since it debuted last June, I've tried to put up with it, tried to work around its countless limitations and atrocious interface. But no more. I'm done.

What's the problem with Podcasts? Ye … Read more

Fund this: An iPhone game controller that's also a case

Too many great iPhone games suffer from digit interruptus: onscreen controls force your thumbs or fingers to block too much of the action. Plus, there's no tactile feedback. meaning you don't get the button-mashing goodness associated with the best console and arcade games.

Developers have proposed a variety of solutions to this problem. For example, ThinkGeek's iCade 8-Bitty gives you a Nintendo-style controller with a D-Pad and lots of buttons -- but it works with only a smattering of games. Plus it's a hassle to carry around.

The upcoming iMpulse controller is small enough to ride … Read more

Hook up an iPhone, or iPod, to your car

In the past, we told you how to "iPod your car," which meant adding some sort of adapter to play music from an iPod through a car's speakers. In this guide, we will show you how to connect your iPhone to your car for sound, which could be music, turn-by-turn navigation, or a phone call. Of course, these solutions can also apply to iPads and iPods.

And if you use an Android phone, check out Car Tech's guide to using your Android phone in the car. … Read more
