Opera embraces WebKit in browser brain transplant

Opera Software, an independent voice in the browser market since the 1990s, will dramatically change its strategy this year by adopting the WebKit browser engine used by Safari and Chrome.

The Norwegian company announced the move today and said it will show off the first fruits of the work with a WebKit-based version of its Android browser at the Mobile World Congress show in less than two weeks. But the company will move to WebKit for its desktop browser, too.

A browser engine processes the Web page instructions written in HTML, JavaScript, and CSS then renders the results on screens. … Read more

LG updates Optimus L-Series handsets for MWC 2013

Mobile World Congress will kick off in Barcelona, Spain, in two weeks, but that doesn't mean the news will wait until then.

LG announced today that it will unveil the next iteration of its L-Series line of mid-tier devices at the mobile conference later this month.

The series includes the successors of the LG Optimus L7, L5, and L3.

The updated L7, aptly called the LG Optimus L7 II, will have a dual-SIM version that will launch in Russia this week.

Government competition brings best of British mobile innovation to MWC

Along with the latest smartphone releases from Nokia, LG and more, this year's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, will play host to 20 of Britain's most innovative mobile companies thanks to the Smart U.K. competition.

The competition -- organized in association with U.K. government body U.K. Trade and Investment (UKTI) -- saw over 60 British-based companies enter, which was narrowed down to 20 by an expert judging panel. All 20 will be given entry to Mobile World Congress by UKTI -- although they'll have to pay for their own flights and accommodation -- … Read more

No massive Google presence at Mobile World Congress

Google will not set up its massive (and fun) booth at Mobile World Congress this year, according to a spokesperson from Google France (translation). Instead, Google will reportedly dispatch an Android support team to assist partners at various locations throughout the conference.

CNET has contacted Google for a statement and will update this article with any new information.

As one of the top destination spots over the last two years, Google's MWC booth has included a smoothie bar, ice cream sandwiches, and plenty of games. Let's not forget the giant, twisting slide that takes pictures of those daring … Read more

Mozilla to launch Firefox OS at MWC?

Well, look what just landed in my in-box a few minutes ago: a save-the-date from Mozilla, best known for its Firefox browser, for a press conference at Mobile World Congress later this month.

Mozilla has been hard at work on Firefox OS, an open-source operating system alternative for developers to really sink their teeth into.

We got our latest hands-on with the developing OS last month at CES, but to me, a press conference worthy of a save-the-date means one thing: that Mozilla is ready to show off a major new development.

CNET reached out to Mozilla and will update … Read more

Lenovo's K900 brings Intel's Clover Trail+ to the smartphone (hands-on)

BARCELONA, Spain--When we first saw the Lenovo K900 at CES early last month, the Chinese company wasn't quite ready for journalists to try out the handset, but it has finally taken off the bubble wrap here at the MobileFocus Global fringe event at MWC.

Upside The 5.5-inch Intel Atom-powered (Clover Trail+) smartphone runs at a speedy clock speed of 2GHz, and we hardly noticed any lag while we were playing with it. While it's certainly a long handset, the 6.9mm barely weighed anything in my hand. Of course, it's worth noting that the K900 strikes … Read more
