Tips for faster iPhone activation

Yesterday we noted significant issues with activating iPhones on the AT&T network and Appleâ??s authorization scheme through iTunes. While the vast majority of users experienced quick activation, some are still receiving the message "Your Activation Requires Additional Time to Complete," and not receiving successful notices; now almost two days after the device's initial release.

Disconnect temporarily Disconnecting the iPhone from the host system, waiting about a minute, then reconnecting the iPhone can re-trigger the activation process and result in successful activation. This may need to be done several times.

iPhone fails to sync all contacts; iTunes hangs on "Syncing contacts"

Several users have reported an issue where iTunes fails to properly synchronize contacts with the iPhone, hanging repeatedly at the "Syncing contacts" phase.

It appears that in most cases, this issue has to do with individual contact entries that contain problematic data. For instance, some users have reported that the issue started after photos were added to contacts on the iPhone.

Try creating a smaller group of contacts in your chosen application (Mac OS X Address Book, Entourage, Outlook, etc.) and re-attempt synchronization. If it works, add a few more contacts in batches and continue to re-attempt synchronization … Read more

Tough to find instant iPhone gratification at AT&T stores

Those iPhone hopefuls who had planned to avoid long lines at Apple stores by visiting AT&T stores had to get lucky to secure one yesterday, and replacements might not arrive for weeks.

Launch day for the iPhone went very smoothly at Apple's retail stores. Plenty of units were available and long lines of customers were moved swiftly in and out of the store. But 12 of 15 AT&T stores surveyed Saturday sold out of their allotments on Friday night, which ranged from 30 units to 90 units. Only one store in Chicago still had 4GB … Read more

Twitter on the iPhone: Hahlo

We predict that there will be a lot of Twitter interfaces for the iPhone. This is the first we've seen, though: Hahlo. It's not crystal clear what its icons do (the star is what you use to creat a Twitter message, for example), but it should take you all of two minutes to get the hang of it anyway.

20 hours with the iPhone: A full, hands-on evaluation...so far

As I mentioned in my previous iPhone post, I took the plunge Friday night and drove down to my local AT&T store for a nice new iPhone. So, with some time on my hands as my girlfriend watches more YouTube videos than anyone else who has ever seen the site, I thought I would give you some insight into my experience with the iPhone and my impressions at this point.

When I got to the AT&T store, I was asked to stand outside the door until one of the seven sales kiosks became available. Within five … Read more

Playing dress-up with the iPhone

As noted back in early May, we were shocked that it had taken so long for iPhone cases to begin showing up, some five months after it had been announced. But no sooner was that item printed that the floodgates began to open.

To date, however, most of the gadget-wear has been mundane to mediocre--hardly befitting the most celebrated consumer product launch in memory, if not history. So even if the latest case from urban apparel company LRG isn't exactly your taste, we think it's worthy of mention at least for an attempt at originality beyond the usual … Read more

No manual music management on iPhone?

During CNET's review of the Apple iPhone I found a surprising omission from the iPhone's device tab in iTunes. It seems that there's no way to manually move content between iTunes and the iPhone. Instead, content management relies entirely on automatic syncing preferences. As someone who uses their iPod on multiple computers, I rely on the 'Manage music and videos manually' check box that appears in the device manager tab when I connect my iPod to iTunes. Without it, each time I sync my iPod to a different computer I run the risk of having content overwritten. … Read more

What can you do with Bluetooth on the iPhone?; Bluetooth File Exchange, iSync do not work

The iPhone has Bluetooth 2.0 EDR built-in, but so far it seems to carry little functionality outside use of accessories like the Apple Bluetooth headset.

Apple's Bluetooth File Exchange for Mac OS X cannot send files to the iPhone stating "Device does not have the necessary services."

iSync for Mac OS X cannot be used to synchronize with the iPhone via Bluetooth, delivering the message "iSync can not connect to this device."

We've yet to hear reports of Windows applications that can successfully interact with the iPhone via Bluetooth.

So, what can be … Read more
