David's iPhone tip of the week: Tap to zoom

Here's an iPhone tip for anyone who can't read the device's screen without the aid of reading glasses or other vision correction: turn on a feature Apple calls Zoom. (The iPhone 3GS and third-generation iPod Touch 32GB and 64GB models all support this feature.)

Once activated, Zoom lets you "zoom" in and out on parts of the screen using a combination of three fingers and a double-tap. Here's how to access the feature:

Activate Zoom on your Apple mobile device

1. Tap Settings app 2. Tap General 3. Tap Accessibility 4. Tap Zoom 5. … Read more

T-Mobile is making good on its promise to release its new phones from the fall CTIA show by November. Last week, the carrier put the Nokia 3711 on sale, and Wednesday it offers the T-Mobile Tap.

Rock Band for iPhone doesn't exactly rock

Rock Band. For iPhone and iPod Touch. Right now in the App Store for $9.99.

Just thought I'd cut right to the crucial information, as hard-core fans of the console mega-hit probably don't need to hear anything more. "Rock Band? iPhone? Ten bucks? Sweet!"

Everyone else should listen up before plunking down that sawbuck. EA's official, real-deal port brings the jamfest to the iPhone in style, with gorgeous visuals, great songs, and some solid multiplayer action.

Unfortunately, compromises abound. The songs are great, but you get only 20 of them (and 5 are locked). … Read more

Q&A: INgrooves CEO on digital distribution and Dolly

INgrooves, a digital distribution company, is fast becoming a favorite of music acts embarking on comebacks.

Last year, San Francisco-based INgrooves oversaw digital distribution and marketing for the release of Dolly Parton's album "Backwoods Barbie." The record debuted as the No. 1 country album on iTunes. This spring, when the spoof metal group Spinal Tap releases its first album since 1992, the boys in the band are trusting INgrooves to distribute the material to iTunes, Amazon, and other online retailers.

But just don't call the privately held INgrooves a music label. "I don't like … Read more

EU to investigate VoIP-tapping techniques

An investigation into the possibility of tapping Internet telephony conversations has been launched by the European Union's Judicial Cooperation Unit, also known as Eurojust.

Italy is leading the Europe-wide feasibility study, announced on Friday. The Italian government has cited concerns that organized criminals and arms and drug traffickers are using VoIP services such as Skype to avoid traditional, more easily tapped phone networks.

"The possibility of intercepting Internet telephony will be an essential tool in the fight against international organized crime within Europe and beyond," said Carmen Manfredda, Eurojust's acting national member for Italy, in a … Read more
