Jaguar racing straight from the Outback!

To close out my "Tribute to Jaguar" week, I decided to bring a racing video from the good ol' days - and incidentally, it brings me back to the decade I started at this week - the 1980s.

This video features noted race car driver Tom Walkinshaw racing a 1980s Jaguar XJS (with a V12 engine!!!) at Mt. Panorama in Australia. The buzz of the engine is music to my ears, and the commentary ain't bad either. Enjoy and I'll see ya next week!

Drifting with Jaguar

For whatever it's worth, the new Vin Diesel racing flick Fast and Furious topped the box office charts over the weekend. So, I thought it timely to bring you a drifting video for today's blog. And keeping with the "All About Jaguar" theme for this week, I managed to find a recent online video featuring someone drifting in a Jaguar XJ sedan.

This video apparently comes from Germany, and it features some cool drifting moves in what appears to be a mid-2000's edition of the Jaguar XJ sedan. The soundtrack goes along real well with … Read more

EU bank grants $1.2 billion in loans for clean cars

The European Investment Bank, backed by European Union member states, approved 866 million euros ($1.2 billion) more in loan money to the auto industry on Tuesday.

The loans are specifically directed to "help design and build cleaner cars with lower carbon dioxide emissions," according to an EIB statement.

The package includes 400 million euros ($531 million) to Nissan's European division for the purpose of developing and building more fuel-efficient vehicles in Britain and Spain. Jaguar Land Rover was approved for a loan of 340 million pounds ($499 million) from the EIB to "to help cut … Read more

Back to the Future: The Original Jaguar XJ Sedan

In keeping with the "Salute to Jaguar" theme for this week, I thought it would be neat to give you all a blast from the past with this video featuring the very first Jaguar XJ sedan ever produced. This vintage video comes from the 1968 Earl's Court Motor Show, and the Jaguar XJ6 is shown right at the beginning of this video. 1968 marks the first year that the Jaguar XJ sedan is produced, and the XJ series would go on to become Jaguar's flagship make/model. As you can see, the Big Cat and it'… Read more

The Modern Jaguar XJ Sedan

In keeping with the Jaguar salute theme for this week, I thought we should jump back to the present day to marvel at the sleek and sophisticated 2009 model of the Jaguar XJ Sedan.

This video comes from the 2008 Geneva auto show, and features the Portfolio edition of Jaguar's flagship sedan. While I know a lot of people have criticized modern Jaguar sedans as looking more like a Ford than a Jag, this beauty is still shiny and plush...just like the Jags I know and love. However, this Big Cat's got a few more bells and … Read more

Buick and Jaguar lead the pack

Probably the only race that Buick and Jaguar would finish in a tie is the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Vehicle Dependability StudySM (VDS), but both are on the top of the leader board this week. Each rank highest in vehicle dependability in a tie. Buick improves from a sixth-place ranking in 2008, while Jaguar improves from 10th place. Following in the top-five rankings this year are Lexus, Toyota and Mercury.

Toyota garners five segment awards for the Highlander, Prius, Sequoia, Solara, and Tundra. Lexus follows with four segment awards for the ES 330 (in a tie with the … Read more

U.K. commissions 'green' Land Rover

Jaguar Land Rover, a subsidiary of Tata Motors, has received a grant worth 27 million pounds--more than $37 million--to mass-produce a "green" crossover vehicle.

The car will be a street version--or a more practical variation--of the LRX concept vehicle that Jaguar Land Rover debuted at the Detroit Motor Show in January 2008.

The concept version was a hybrid 2-liter turbo diesel crossover vehicle, combining features of a car and an SUV. The concept got about 50 mpg on average, according to its specs.

Jaguar Land Rover's announcement comes as the U.K. government held a meeting Wednesday … Read more

Sentience takes the guesswork out maximizing hybrid efficiency

How can hybrids become even more efficient? You can start by removing the driver from the equation.

The Sentience Research Vehicle is a hybrid test car that uses existing onboard systems, mobile communications, and advanced mapping technologies to determine the most fuel efficient way to get to a destination. The project is a joint effort by Ricardo Company and project partners Jaguar-Land Rover, Transport Research Laboratory, and several other European interest groups, and was revealed earlier this week.

Basically, the Sentience's system removes the guesswork from and automates when and the best way to accelerate, brake, and balance the car's electrical load. … Read more

Why some cars get stopped by cops and others don't

Highway patrolmen have a lot of time to contemplate cars. And I've always wondered why they stop the car going 10 mph over the limit rather than the one that just overtook it in the outside lane at the speed of Joan Rivers' mouth.

So I am grateful to CNET's Wayne Cunningham for revealing the list of the 10 most ticketed cars and the 10 least ticketed:

Most ticketed     Rate        Least ticketed     Rate Hummer H2/H3 463% Jaguar XJ 11% Scion tC 460% Chevrolet Suburban 16% … Read more

Photos: Loads of horsepower on the floor at Detroit

There may be a lot of new green cars on the floor at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, but powerful cars still have a strong presence. We take a look at the new Ford Shelby, Jaguar R series, Audi R8 5.2 FSI Quattro, the last SLR, and a new supercar from Revenge. These cars show there is still a place for highly tuned engines with performance-oriented suspensions.
