Mirasol displays: running late, worth the wait?

Two years ago, at the 2010 edition of CES, I got all excited about a technology from Qualcomm called Mirasol--a new type of color screen that ran for weeks on one battery charge, was fast enough to permit fluid user interfaces and video playback, and which didn't wash out in direct sunlight.

Mirasol looked like a good fit for Kindle-style e-readers, and Qualcomm said that it expected an e-reader with a Mirasol screen to arrive by the third quarter of the year. It didn't. A whole lot of other stuff did happen, though. Monochrome E-Ink screens got more … Read more

Barnes & Noble offers free Nook with NYT or People subscription

Barnes & Noble will give customers a free or discounted Nook e-reader when they purchase a one-year subscription to People or the New York Times, a limited-time offer--good through March 9--that's also one of the first major attempts to piggyback e-readers onto magazine or newspaper subscriptions.

"We're continuing to make it easier than ever for customers to get more out of their Nook device," Jonathan Shar, vice president and general manager of digital newsstand at Barnes & Noble, said in a press release. "And we are excited to offer our most popular content and leading … Read more

No Mirasol e-reader for U.S., but China gets Bambook Sunflower

LAS VEGAS--Qualcomm's Mirasol display technology, which was supposed to be the next big thing in e-readers, still hasn't made it into a product in the U.S. or Europe, but the Bambook Sunflower E-Reader is coming to China in February.

"With the Bambook Sunflower e-Reader, Shanghai Nutshell and Shanda have raised consumer expectations for digital reading, both in terms of color content and an interactive user experience," said Clarence Chui, senior vice president and general manager of Qualcomm MEMS Technologies. … Read more

Velocity Micro Cruz tablets

The tablet wars of 2011 were waged on two fronts. On one side you had well-funded heavyweights (HP, Samsung, RIM, Asus) assaulting the iPad with equally ambitious and expensive creations. On the other side you had budget-minded manufacturers trying desperately to create a viable, cheap tablet alternative.

The Velocity Micro Cruz series is the result of the latter warfront. In 2011, the company launched no less than six low-priced tablets, running the gamut from $119 resistive screen clunkers like the Cruz R100, all the way up to the $299 10-inch Cruz T410.

Whether marketed as e-book readers or Android tablets, … Read more

iPad who? Tablets try again at CES

2011 was the year when Android tablets broke loose and ran rampant over the annual Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas. It was here that Motorola showed off the world's first Android 3.0 tablet and lookalike Android 2.x devices seemed to pop out of every booth.

The year that followed has been a tumultuous one for tablets. Big players like Hewlett-Packard and RIM released major products that quickly found their way to the bargain bin. Apple sent everyone back to the drawing board after the release of the ultrathin iPad 2. And Amazon reset everyone's expectations … Read more

Get a Barnes & Noble Nook Simple Touch e-reader for $74.99

Need a sexy, practical, affordable last-minute gift? Barnes & Noble has you covered with the Nook Simple Touch e-reader for $74.99. And that includes expedited shipping, so it should arrive no later than December 22.

More good news: the Simple Touch is new, not refurbished--unlike the Nook Color I've been pimping for what seems like months.

There is, however, one small catch: This deal is available only through eBay, so you'll need an account there. Also, the auction page is currently showing "Limited quantity available," meaning this will likely sell out soon.

Actually, it appeared … Read more

An e-reader or tablet for Christmas?

Tablets and e-readers are all the rage this holiday season. So which device is right for the loved ones on your Christmas list?

Tablet or e-reader?

Dear Maggie, I am thinking about getting my wife an e-reader or a tablet for Christmas. And I wanted to hear your thoughts. Basically, I'm just looking for something she can read books and magazines on. An Internet browser would also be good if it's available, but it's not necessary. In our home, we already have two lap tops, two iPhones and a BlackBerry, so we're pretty connected as it … Read more

How to read your Nook books on the Kindle Fire

A quick search for the Nook app in the Kindle Fire's Appstore results in absolutely nothing.

The Nook app is available for Android (which is the Fire's OS), but Amazon chose to exclude its competitor's e-reader app from its store.

We don't blame it, but those who are making the switch from Nook to Kindle (or use both) would benefit from access to their old purchases.

After all, it's not like you can sell your old Nook purchases to a used bookstore, right?

Barnes & Noble sales drop despite red-hot Nook demand

Strong Nook sales weren't quite enough to stem a net loss and slightly lower revenue that hit Barnes & Noble in its second quarter.

The bookseller was helped by higher sales of its Nook e-readers as well as the liquidation of the remaining stores of former rival Borders. Revenue from the company's BN.com Web site grew 17 percent over the prior year's quarter, reaching $206 million from $177 million. B&N attributed the gain to sales of Nook devices and digital content. Comparable sales across the entire Nook business jumped 85 percent in the second … Read more
