LiveJournal appoints Yahoo alum as new exec

LiveJournal, the blogging platform that was a few years ahead of its time, announced Thursday that it has appointed Matthew Berardo, most recently the senior director of international business and product management at Yahoo, as its vice president and general manager.

Berardo had been at Yahoo for years, seven of which were spent in its London office at Yahoo Europe. Berardo will report directly to SUP CEO Andrew Paulson.

Capcom game chair tingles the spine

In the hypercompetitive business of game chairs, it's easy to get carried away. But at least one manufacturer is sticking to the basics.

Rather than adding more external bells and whistles, Capcom's "Reactor Video Game Chair" has concentrated on the chair itself with "eight high-impact vibrating motors" positioned in the upper and lower back as well as the seat "so that every bump or blow is felt by the gamer."

It also comes with head-mounted 3D speakers, according to Slippery Brick, but the best feature in our view is its "variable … Read more

A Danish chair you won't find at IKEA

There have been other multimedia loungers that hang screens precariously overhead, but usually they try to pack in as many functions as possible for entertainment or even (gasp) work. The "Surf Chair," however, keeps things simple: It just lets you lie back and immerse yourself in the Web.

That simplicity contributes to the classically clean lines of Danish design. And don't worry about all those cords tethering the peripherals in the photo; it actually won the "Internet Collection" competition of the Scandinavian Furniture Fair a few years ago, according to BornRich, so the gear should … Read more

It's 'au revoir' for Netvibes CEO Tariq Krim

Netvibes, a company offering services for creating personalized home pages and a platform for widgets, announced on Thursday that founder and Chief Executive Tariq Krim is stepping aside.

Although Chief Operating Officer Freddy Mini will be taking his place as CEO, Krim will remain on the Paris-headquartered company's board of directors. No concrete reason for his departure was provided.

In a release Thursday, Mini called Krim "a true visionary" and touted the fact that nearly 1,000 clients are using the Netvibes widget platform, which went open-source last month. Mini, a former employee of CNET News.com … Read more

As Facebook goes corporate, Mark Zuckerberg loses an early player

It's kind of like this: an indie rock band gets signed to a major label, and after a taste of the high life, the bassist jumps ship.

On Sunday, word got out that Adam D'Angelo, chief technology officer at Facebook and a friend of founder Mark Zuckerberg since high school, had submitted his resignation on Friday. D'Angelo had been one of Facebook's first employees, though he did not have formal "co-founder" status.

Reports swirled that he was at odds with Zuckerberg, or that he was no longer interested in the position; whatever the reason, … Read more

Report: Facebook wants Marc Andreessen on its board

Facebook has asked tech veteran Marc Andreessen to join its board of directors, according to Kara Swisher at All Things D. The deal isn't finalized, apparently, but Andreessen has "verbally agreed" to the commitment.

The Netscape founder is currently at the helm of his own social-networking site, Ning, which lets Web users create their own branded community sites without technical expertise. Because of its focus on niche communities rather than mass communication, it's not a direct Facebook competitor.

Facebook, meanwhile, has been padding its ranks with seasoned industry leaders as a means of competing with the … Read more

Top-shelf Googler heads to Facebook

Another prominent Google employee has jumped ship to Facebook.

Elliot Schrage, vice president of global communications and public affairs at Google, has been hired in a similar role at the fast-growing social network, reports Kara Swisher of All Things Digital.

Schrage's role at both companies, founded in a legal rather than marketing background, involves dealing with D.C. lobbyists and policymakers in addition to the press. His move to Facebook follows Sheryl Sandberg, who became chief operating officer at Facebook after a stint as vice president of global sales at Google. Schrage will report to Sandberg, Swisher writes, but … Read more

This week in portable home furniture

I have at least a good half decade--maybe more--until I become a stadium-chair-toting soccer mom.

And I hope that when I get there, these nice people, or someone, is making this into a real product by then. OhGizmo has a link to this designer briefcase-cum-folding-chair, which is a great way to disguise the fact that you're carrying a chair with you.

It's a regular hard-shell briefcase with nylon straps that make it attachable to something sturdy enough to hold your own weight. Then you can sit and enjoy. I should also mention it's an art project (from … Read more

With this setup, who needs the oxygen?

After having witnessed their rise in the bacchanalian heydey of the dot-com boom, we've always had an odd fascination with oxygen bars. And yes, we admit that it probably has something to do with Dennis Hopper's character in Blue Velvet too.

That aside, the "Entertainment Oxygen Lounge" may prove too difficult to resist even for skeptics like us. Not only does it have the requisite stress-reducing and mood-enhancing equipment, according to BornRich, but it combines that system with a massage chair. And we all know how we feel about those.

It gets even better: Add a … Read more

Report: Twitter fires VP of engineering

Just days after the news broke that Twitter lead architect Blaine Cook was leaving the company, it appears that the microblogging start-up has lost another techie: Silicon Alley Insider reported Thursday morning that Lee Mighdoll, vice president of engineering, will depart the company.

"After three months, both Lee and Twitter came to the conclusion that the match was not perfect," Twitter co-founder Biz Stone wrote in an e-mail to Alley Insider editor Peter Kafka. The company had hired Mighdoll in January. "We are seeking to fill this role with a refined search criteria that fits with our … Read more
