Griffin extends uTorrent's plans
Long considered the fastest and most unobtrusive of the various torrent clients around, uTorrent announced last week a surprising step toward plug-ins with the introduction of an "app store" in the Windows-only alpha release of uTorrent 2.2.
Called the Griffin project, the HTML and JavaScript-based API system will display apps from within the uTorrent interface in an embedded browser window. The developer SDK has yet to be released, and there was no indication which browser engine was being used at the time of writing. Currently, four demo apps are available.

Wolfram Alpha's niche continues to elude
One year after its debut, the world is still not ready for Wolfram Alpha.
Few would argue that despite the success of Google, Internet search is a solved problem. The way that content is being shared across it is evolving so quickly means that better ways of discovering and presenting that content will always be welcome.
Wolfram Alpha certainly provides a different way to think about Internet search. It's heavily weighted toward computational queries, and its practice of curating its results as opposed to simply serving up whatever is available on the Web means its results can be more … Read more
Buzz Out Loud 1197: Where this episode is no joke (podcast)
Once again this year, we've had it with April Fool's jokes. Except for one. You'll see. If you're more tired of iPad than you are of April Fool's, skip the first half of the show where we recap other people's reviews since Apple refuses to give us an iPad early. Also, we debunk Microsoft's claims that Chrome is fundamentally insecure, which almost ought to be a joke.

Mozilla issues new Firefox test release
For eager beavers who want a taste of Firefox to come, Mozilla issued a second preview release Wednesday of the browser.
The software is based on version 1.9.3 of the Gecko browser engine that underlies Firefox. The current Firefox 3.6, and an update called Lorentz, are based on 1.9.2.
The headline feature of the new preview release is the same for Lorentz, though: out-of-process plug-ins, which means that Adobe Systems Flash Player and the like run in a separate memory compartment to protect the browser overall when they crash. Mozilla hopes people will see how … Read more
Trillian for Mac arrives as an alpha
Multi-protocol chat client Trillian follows up its resurgence last year with a long-rumored Mac version. Trillian for Mac is an unstable alpha, lacking many of the features that make Trillian Astra appealing on Windows, but even so it offers users a good idea of what's to come from Cerulean Studios.
This build isn't really ready yet to compete with the popular Adium, but cross-platform users will appreciate that the contact sync works. Enter in your Trillian username and password and all of your other instant messaging accounts will be imported, including passwords. Basic IM functions are fine, with … Read more
