Everyone likes Pac-Man, even chimps

This isn't new, but considering the recent string of Pac-Man videos that have been appearing on Crave recently, I thought I'd add this clip of a chimp playing Pac-Man to the mix. (I found it over at Table of Malcontents.)

Our co-Craver Tim Moynihan might've directed a short film about a guy in a Pac-Man suit, but I'm pretty sure this chimp would kick his butt at the game himself.

Lycos Mix fails to stir

Lycos Mix is a new video-playlist creation tool that lets you string together video clips from various hosting services. The videos sit beside a live chat window based off of Lycos' Cinema technology. Casual observers can come in, watch videos, and chat with you. It's almost like a bar except a little creepier.

When you're done adding content, which is done by pasting URLs or using the Lycos Mix bookmarklet from the content's source page, you can watch, rearrange, or chat about the videos, all within the same screen. The adding process is a little arduous, as … Read more

MeeVee adds personalized Web content

We checked out MeeVee in September, and cited its lack of integration with recording and viewing services. Today, MeeVee has strengthened its viewing service with two new features: personalized networks and community video. Essentially the site lets you pick out your favorite shows and then aggregates relevant videos from hosting sites like YouTube and EVTV1 (with several more on the way). Clicking on any of these videos will actually take you outside of the MeeVee site, but there's a helpful frame put on the top of the screen to direct you back. We're told MeeVee is moving to … Read more

Giving the little guy a piece of the Web media action

BOSTON--So-called user generated content is being built into the business models of forward-looking media companies as they venture out onto the Web, according to experts who spoke today at the MIT Enterprise Forum's Brave New Web conference on Wednesday. (See this CNET News.com story.)

Jeremy Allaire, the CEO of online video company Brightcove, said that Web is a tiny fraction of the overall media industry but that's changing because media companies are starting to distribute video over the Web. Brightcove itself is building social media features to its video distribution system which will allow people to post … Read more

Kaneva: MySpace + Second Life mash-up

Part social network and part 3D virtual world, Kaneva also throws in a dash of YouTube, with media sharing for pictures and Flash video. I received news of the service today, but Kaneva has been kicking about since late 2004. Essentially you begin with a standard social-network profile, then earn prestige points to work your way up a site leaderboard until you're invited to join the 3D social world, which launched its beta in April of last year.

Points are given as rewards for adding content to your profile and interacting with other Keneva members. Once you join the … Read more

GabJam: Viral video by numbers

GabJam is a viral video service made for user-generated content, but think more soapbox-standing and lonelygirl15-style personal musings than, you know, cat videos or pirated clips of Colbert.

That's because it's all short recordings made on a Webcam. The company is called GabSight, and it offers two services: GabMail, which is one-to-one video messaging, and GabJam, a threaded, reply-all version of video messaging.

Several video messaging services are beginning to pop up--check out Webware's coverage of Eyejot, which debuted at Demo 07 last week.

CEO Mark Lipsky and I chatted by phone (I wish I could … Read more

From the archives: Even more live-action Pac-Man

This morning, when I wrote up a post about The Go! Team's music video featuring live-action Pac-Man, I traced its roots back to a 2004 phenomenon known as Pac-Manhattan. Little did I know that the history of guys in Pac-Man suits goes back even further than that: extending, in fact, to a silent film made by fellow Craver Tim Moynihan in 2002. Called "The Current Adventures of Pac-Man," this flick features a 37-year-old Pac-Man, now alcoholic and "haunted by the ghosts of his past."

Tim is behind the camera, so unfortunately that's not him … Read more

YouTube adds Reddit-like features on Super Bowl minisite

YouTube's Super Bowl ads page is looking mighty fancy this year. They've created a new voting platform called Supervote. If anything, it's looking a little bit like Reddit with hot or not voting that moves each ad up or down based on user votes.

The page was set up as completely separate from the actual viewing gallery.

What interests me about this is whether or not this might become a permanent fixture on YouTube. There's already a star system for voting on YouTube videos, but having user-chosen list on the front page of YouTube as a … Read more

British pop band plays Pac-Manhattan!

Geeky, oddball music videos have been all the rage since OK Go hit it big by dancing on treadmills for their song "Here It Goes Again." Well, here's the latest addition to that trend. A similarly-named band, Britain's The Go! Team, created a music video for their song "Junior Kickstart" in which they run around the streets of New York City playing live-action Pac-Man.

The video's cool. But "Pac-Manhattan" is nothing new; the concept first surfaced as a final project by students at New York University's Interactive Telecommunications Program a … Read more
