Samsung continued its fall deluge of new phones Thursday when it introduced two cell phones for T-Mobile. The Samsung Gravity is a messaging phone in the style of the recently-announced Samsung Rant, and the Samsung Behold (we don't know where Samsung comes up with these names, either) offers a full touch screen.
Though we thought the Rant was Samsung's answer to the popular LG Rumor, we see now that the Gravity (aka the SGH-T459) more closely resembles the LG phone. Features include a slide-out alphabetical keyboard for rapid messaging, a 1.3-megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, a speakerphone, organizer … Read more
There are some places an LCD screen makes no sense, like on a vent hood. But there are other places where the inclusion of an LCD screen is so natural that it practically seems obvious once you see it. Like on the fridge.
Samsung isn't the only one to come up with this idea, but it is a nice addition to the company's new French door fridge, announced on November 3. The RFG299 has a 7-inch LCD screen just above the ice and water dispenser. The screen offers one-touch access to calendars, schedules, showcase photos, nutrition facts, and … Read more
Samsung has put out some pretty good Blu-ray players, but the company needs to setup an RSS feed to keep buyers up to date with the constantly changing firmware plans. We got a note from Samsung this afternoon explaining that the firmware update adding DTS-HD High Resolution decoding to the Samsung BD-P1500, BD-P2500, and BD-P2550 has been delayed until the end of the year. That means owners will have to live with standard DTS soundtracks for a little bit longer if they don't own an HDMI-compatible receiver with onboard decoding for DTS-HD Master Audio.
On the upside, Samsung … Read more
We recently put the largest plasma TV we've reviewed yet, Samsung's 63-inch PN63A760, though its paces, and this massive plasma came up a bit short of the tough competition. Although its distinctive red styling makes it stand out, its lighter black levels don't help its picture quality.
We compared the Samsung directly with a pair of other huge-screen plasmas, the 58-inch Panasonic TH-58PZ800U and the 60-inch LG 60PG60, and both delivered better black levels and more-accurate color. That's not to say the Samsung wasn't without its charms--we liked its antireflective screen, and proponents of of dejudder will appreciate its Smooth option (although it doesn't work with 1080p sources). The TV's prodigious feature set, which includes a full suite of interactive options, will also draw some fans.Read the full review of the Samsung PN63A760.
Apparently even Bang & Olufsen is feeling the effects of the sour economy. The Danish company, which has a built a reputation as a purveyor of high-end electronics, is exiting the cell phone business. The Financial Times reported Wednesday that besides phones, Bang & Olufsen will also stop making DVD players and recorders in an effort to concentrate on televisions and audio equipment.
Granted, it's not a huge loss to the cell phone world. The Bang & Olufsen Serene, which the company designed two years ago with Samsung, certainly had an intriguing design. But the phone faltered in functionality … Read more
The Samsung Rant is one of Sprint's latest messaging-centric phones, and we have to say we like it. It's a little bulky, but that's because it has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Though we had a few quibbles about the navigation array, we thought the keyboard felt roomy and tactile. We were pleased with its feature set, too: it comes with a 2-megapixel camera, EV-DO, and support for Sprint Power Vision. All that and it's less than $50. Check out our full review as well as our slide show for a more in-depth look.
The chip equipment business is "on hold," said an analyst at a major industry association, and that bodes ill for the electronics industry in 2009.
Chip equipment makers signal how the electronics industry will fare in the future. They take orders from chipmakers which, in turn, take orders from electronic gadget makers.
Lara Chamness, a senior market analyst in industry research and statistics at Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International, talked about prospects for the industry in an interview.
