Portal 2 closed until 2011; 'public safety' cited

Valve may have only announced Portal 2 a few brief months ago, but the game's development has apparently already run afoul of some evil machination in the Aperture Science laboratories. On Wednesday, the Seattle-area studio announced that its follow-up to 2007's award-winning Portal has been bumped to 2011 on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The black-humored first-person puzzler had previously been scheduled to arrive this fall.

According to a release from the studio titled "Valve Announces Making Games is Hard," Portal 2's delay came about as part of "the successful completion of an … Read more

Israel says U.S. iPads not welcome for now

Now that the iPad has been delayed for international customers, people around the globe who can't wait might be tempted to buy a U.S. version of the tablet and bring it with them to their home countries.

In most places that won't be a problem. But in Israel, it will result in confiscation.

According to a report in Israel newspaper Haaretz, the country's Communications Ministry has decided to "block the import of iPads to Israel." The paper also reported that when people attempt to go through customs, officers have been ordered to take all … Read more

Plastic Logic Que e-reader delayed till summer

Orson Welles famously used to say in his commercials for Paul Masson that the winemaker would "sell no wine before its time." Apparently, Plastic Logic has adopted a similar philosophy, as its once highly anticipated Plastic Logic Que proReader has encountered another snag and won't be released this spring after all.

Alas, the company continues to "fine-tune the features and enhance the overall product experience," which means that those who preordered the rather expensive e-reader aimed at mobile professionals will have to wait till summer to get their units.

Richard Archuleta, CEO of Plastic Logic, … Read more

JooJoo tablet delayed due to screen issues

The JooJoo Internet tablet, nee CrunchPad, has been delayed due to a manufacturing issue, Fusion Garage said Friday. The $499 touch-screen device was supposed to be delivered to consumers at the end of this month. Preorder customers will get a free JooJoo accessory to compensate for the delay, Fusion Garage added.

The 12.1-inch JooJoo started off as a mobile device envisioned by TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington. It … Read more

The 404 Podcast 524: Where you should avoid racist polar bears

On today's episode of CNET's The 404 Podcast, the guys share the mics with longtime friend Clayton Morris of "Fox and Friends" and co-host of the Grizzly Bear Egg Cafe.

Anyone who listens to our show on a regular basis knows that very little preparation goes into each episode, but we always have a great time with Clayton, and today we spend the first half of the show talking about Jeff's appearance on NPR's All Things Considered, where he spent some time speaking with host Robert Siegel about his concerns over racism in multiplayer video games. After Wilson spends some time drooling over Siegel's baritone radio voice, Clayton tell us about his humble beginnings in the broadcasting industry and even does a few spot-on impersonations of New York's local television anchors.

After the break, Clayton tells us about his brief but educational sojourn into the armpit of the Internet that is Chat Roulette. Acting as the illegitimate child of Omegle and Skype, the site uses your Webcam to pair you up in a video chat room with a stranger on the Internet.

Clayton and the three of us attempt to describe the most common shared experience on CR: what might seem like a completely innocent Web site used to create new friendships across the world quickly falls flat on its face as you're faced with the worst the Web has to offer. Racism, misogyny, nudity, and pornography are just a few of the scenes you'll witness, so enter at your own peril, and don't forget to breathe...it's just a Web site.

Microsoft said on Thursday that it would delay by "a few weeks" the launch of its Visual Studio 2010 developer tool suite and version 4.0 of the .Net Framework.

High volume of Mac sales may account for iMac delay

Apple's delay in shipping the 27-inch iMac may have more to do with the sheer volume of sales than any problems with the graphics chips, according to numbers from market research firm NPD.

Stephen Baker, NPD's vice president of industry analysis, told CNET on Monday that for October and November, Mac desktop sales were up 74 percent over the same period last year. While NPD did not break the numbers down by desktop model, it's clear the iMac is a top seller.

In fact, the 27-inch iMac appears to be selling so well, it could account for … Read more
