Toyota integrating Internet radio app

Toyota announced that it is working with Clear Channel to integrate the latter's mobile app, iheart radio, into some of its vehicles next year.

The iheart radio app is currently available for iPhone, Blackberry, Android, and Windows Phone 7. It lets you listen to more than 750 Clear Channel radio stations, the majority from specific cities with a few genre-oriented stations not tied to a particular market. Colorado gets biorefinery from DOE grant

ClearFuels Technology announced Thursday it signed a letter of cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy to build a biorefinery in Colorado.

ClearFuels will receive an initial $7.7 million toward the construction of the Colorado refinery as part of an overall $22.6 million DOE grant.

The biorefinery will contain a biomass gasifier capable of producing diesel and jet fuel from clean biomass, and be installed at Rentech's Energy Technology Center in Commerce City, Colo. Rentech has a 25 percent investment in ClearFuels and is partnering with it to develop commercial biorefineries.

CFL bulb with safety skin keeps mercury inside

Florida-based lighting company ClearLite is introducing a new CFL bulb with an unbreakable safety shell that prevents mercury from escaping, a feature that addresses some health concerns with CFLs.

The SX-4000 silicone skin remains intact even if the ArmorLite bulb inside shatters, according to ClearLite, which is rolling out its bulb in December and January.

Not everyone is aware of the danger of broken CFLs. Because of the small amount of mercury in them, current EPA guidelines call for evacuating people and pets from the area where a bulb has shattered.

Clearwire unveils largest WiMax test area

Clearwire Communications has created a sandbox more than 20 square miles in size where developers can play with WiMax.

Clearwire announced on Tuesday the launch of the largest test area yet for its 4G WiMax service in Silicon Valley. Covering a wide area from Santa Clara to Mountain View to parts of Palo Alto, the company's Clear 4G WiMAX Innovation Network will let developers test the mobile broadband network on a large scale.

SAP sales drop but earnings rise

SAP on Wednesday reported a 4 percent gain in earnings for the second quarter despite lower sales.

For the quarter ended June 30, the business software giant netted 423 million euros ($600 million) compared with 408 million euros for 2008's second quarter. The company attributed the gain to cost cuts and to stronger growth in its profit margin, the net difference between sales and earnings.

Expedited airport-security service shuts down

Despite pulling in 260,000 travelers at $199 each, Clear's expedited security-clearance program in 18 airports has shut down.

Verified Identity Pass, which operates the Clear service, said via e-mail and on its Web site that it was "unable to negotiate an agreement with its senior creditor to continue operations." The Clear service was suspended at all 18 airports as of 11 a.m. PDT Monday.

The message to Clear subscribers like myself: "Get back in line."
