The public infrastructure for electric vehicle charging is a mess. Some stations are free, while some require payment. Of the latter, you may have to be preregistered with the charging station network or need a chipped credit card to pay at the station. Recargo, the maker of the PlugShare charging station locator app, attempts to standardize payments for charging with its new Pay with PlugShare feature.PlugShare both a Web site and an app for iPhone and Android that shows the locations of public EV charging stations. Along with each station entry, users can add notes, most importantly explicit directions … Read more
An important attribute of any smartphone mount for your car is how easily you can attach and detach the phone. iOmounts attempts to solve this issue by using a magnet in its new iOauto phone mount.
One problem: the iOauto mount's magnet is almost too powerful.
For the in-vehicle iOauto mount, iOmounts partnered with ProClip, a company that has been making device mounts to fit in cars for decades, and has many products customized for specific vehicles. Although iOmounts sent me an example of the iOauto attached to a suction cup mount, this magnetic phone holder can fit the … Read more

The new Corvette has arrived and it's both remarkably modern and thoroughly vintage Vette, right down to some quaintly old-school tech under the hood. I think you'll enjoy our drive and walkaround tour of what they've done to create this seventh-generation car.
I've been getting a number of e-mails lately about hydrogen fuel cell cars (i.e., what ever happened to them) and CNG natural gas cars. So we're taking on the basics of each starting … Read more
Driving down the freeway, the low rumble of a passing motorcycle took me by surprise, the noise only obtrusive because the 2014 Bentley Flying Spur I was in did such a good job of shielding my ears from all the other traffic around. In fact, that motorcycle was probably obnoxiously loud, the kind that roars down the street late on a Sunday night setting off car alarms.
From the driver's seat of the Flying Spur, however, it merely registered as a bass growl, temporarily eclipsing the music pouring from the stereo.
If you ever wonder why anyone would pay $… Read more

Tomorrow's cars will probably all be connected cars. For drivers, this means better access to the media on your phone and in the cloud, but for automakers that means finding better and easier ways to add that connectivity to their vehicles. Enter Broadcom with its newly announced line of integrated wireless chips for automotive applications.
Broadcom's new BCM89335 5G WiFi and Bluetooth Smart Ready combo chip will allow automakers to easily integrate the latest generation 802.11ac wireless standards, which Broadcom markets as "5G Wi-Fi," as well as Bluetooth Low Energy wireless communication into their vehicles … Read more
While reviewing the 2013 Chevy Spark, I drove the 85 miles from San Francisco to Sacramento to test the freeway-worthiness of its little 1.25-liter engine. Driving the 2014 Chevy Spark EV, with its EPA-rated 82-mile range, I couldn't pull off that long of a trip.
As a subcompact, the Spark makes a good package for GM's first pure-electric car since the EV1, and it has the right model name for an electric. However, its performance specs are on par with the majority of current electric vehicles, making it suitable only as an urban or suburban runabout.
