For years, whenever someone at a party would ask me, "so what's your favorite car?" or "what's the coolest car you've driven?" I'd blurt out "the Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera" faster and with more flourish than you could say "Red Ryder carbine action 200-shot range model air rifle." It's embarrassing, but I've been in love with the impractical wedge-shaped supercar ever since I got a chance to track one back in 2009. I know -- it doesn't make sense, but supercars have a way … Read more
With space for six or seven passengers, a whisper-quiet cabin, a respectable load of safety tech, and an available rear-seat entertainment, the 2014 Buick Enclave AWD Premium seems like it would be a nice minivan alternative for moms and dads. However, the presence of the tri-shield Buick badge places it firmly in many prospective owners' minds as more of a grandma and grandpa kind of ride.
The automaker has been making great strides to update its image and appear more youthful with a string of sporty sedans with greatly improved tech. Has any of this young DNA seeped into the … Read more
While impressive that the Corvette model has been in continuous production for over 60 years, more astounding is the lack of a slacker in its seven generations. You might decry the crippled power output of some mid-70s models, or sniff a little at the C4's design. But none of these could really be called bad. So Chevy faced an uphill battle designing the 2014 Corvette, the C7, for seventh generation.
The company felt it did so well with the C7 that it is called the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray; the Stingray name having only been applied to two previous … Read more
I love a small, fast car with plenty of cornering capability, so was more than thrilled to attend a press drive event for the 2015 Subaru WRX in Northern California. The long-awaited newest generation of the WRX met the public eye at the Los Angeles Auto Show last month, two years after the launch of the vehicle on which it is based, the newest generation of the Subaru Impreza. Unlike the Impreza, the WRX only comes in a sedan format, 80 percent of its sheet metal is different, and it 268-turbo-boosted horses are stabled under the hood.

With a generous loadout of safety features, innovative technologies like Driver Easy Speak, and a thrifty Hybrid power train option, the 2014 Toyota Highlander may be the ultimate mom-mobile.
The slightly enlarged seven-passenger crossover debuts for the 2014 model year with a laundry list of new features, including a revision of the automaker's Entune dashboard app interface, a suspension and chassis that have been retuned and refined for a quieter, more comfortable ride, and a new look that blends the trapezoidal grille and eagle-eyed headlamps of the automaker's Tundra and Sequoia with a dash of Lexus-inspired finesse. It'… Read more
Getting a little bored with the chase-or-be-chased gameplay in Need for Speed Rivals? Maybe a little pony power is all it will take to get you back on the streets of Redview County.
The 2015 Ford Mustang, unveiled with no shortage of pomp just last week, today joins the ranks of playable cars. A patch hitting all platforms sometime before the day is through will add the car to the game. Also included will be a series of liveries, some created by the devs, others voted on by the fans.
We had a chance to take the car for a … Read more
As the end of the year closes in, the Car Tech staff takes a look back at the cars we have reviewed, challenged with the task of determining the best tech cars available. As the preliminary stage in coming up with the Tech Car of the Year for 2013, we picked out five nominees from a year's worth of reviews. For a car to qualify as a Tech Car of the Year nominee, we had to have given it a full review, with plenty of drive time and exploration of cabin tech features.
One trend that stood out for us this year was autonomous driving. No production car currently allows fully autonomous driving, but many come with driver assistance features leading in that direction. We also looked to connected tech in the cabin, a big consideration in previous years, and general excellence in cabin electronics. Drive systems, from the engine bay to transmission and suspension, also came under consideration.
Check out our list of nominees and editors' comments, place a vote for your favorite, and discuss the cars in our comments section. Our CNET jury will place their votes, and we will announce the winner on December 18. We will also be announcing the Car Tech 10, a set of 10 other awards for notable achievements in the automotive space. … Read more
In heavy traffic on the freeway, I let the 2014 Audi A7 TDI's cruise control handle braking and accelerating, and gave lane-keeping assist a try by letting the car drift over to the left lane line. Cruise control, using its radar to track the car ahead, unerringly handled stop-and-go without my intervention. And before the car crossed the lane line, the camera-based lane assist moved the wheel under my light grip, steering the A7 TDI back into its own lane.
Was I experiencing a glimpse of our autonomous driving future?
Not exactly, as the pull on the steering wheel … Read more
The 2014 QX70's engine room offers no surprises. The midsize crossover is powered by Nissan/Infiniti's 3.7-liter VQ-series V-6 engine; the same mill that makes an appearance in nearly every vehicle in the automaker's lineup smaller than the QX80.
The power plant makes 325 horsepower in this incarnation, sending its 267 pound-feet of torque through a seven-speed automatic transmission on the way to the automaker's Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system. This rear-biased AWD system defaults to 100 percent rear-wheel drive, but can direct up to 50 percent of available torque on demand to the front wheels … Read more
With its flagship sedans, formerly the RL and now the RLX, Acura has struggled to maintain parity with the likes of rivals Lexus and Mercedes-Benz. That difficulty had to do with Acura's insistence on a front-wheel-drive platform fitted with a V-6 engine, pitted against rear-wheel-drive V-8 cars, and relative size. Acura's flagship sedans tended to compare with second-tier cars from the competition. Despite the large cabin and impressive Krell audio system, Acura stuck to its guns with the 2014 Acura RLX model.
The 2014 Acura RLX Sport Hybrid, however, sets itself apart through high-tech power and economy.
