Poll: Is the T-Mobile G1 a must-have gadget?

There's been plenty of buzz and anticipation over the T-Mobile G1, dating back to the day when Google Android was first announced and the smartphone was known as the HTC Dream. What would the Android platform offer? What would the Google phone look like? Could it be better than the iPhone?

Well, we got our answer a few days ago, along with a number of other tech sites (check out TG Daily for a nice roundup), and I think it'd be fair to say we all came away with the same general consensus: lackluster design and not quite … Read more

3G speed test: iPhone 3G vs. T-Mobile G1

The T-Mobile G1 is officially on sale now, but maybe you're still on the fence about it. What's Google Android all about? What's up with the design? Is it better than the iPhone 3G? Perhaps you're wondering which of these 3G smartphones is faster? Well, glad you asked.

In this quick Prizefight, CNET TV's Brian Tong and I pit the two against each other in a 3G speed test, clocking the time it takes for each device to load CNET News from start to finish. Now, there are a couple of things to remember. Both … Read more

BlackBerry Bold gets official release date, pricing

This is it! This is the news we've been waiting for since May. On Wednesday, Research In Motion announced that the long-awaited RIM BlackBerry Bold will finally be available starting November 4 at AT&T for $299.99 with a two-year contract and after a mail-in rebate.

Though the smartphone was originally slated for a summer release, as we all painfully know, the Bold was delayed time and time again. Part of it was the lengthy carrier certification process and most recently, RIM said it held off on the release to make sure the 3G experience would be … Read more

New HP iPaqs invade Europe; no word on U.S. availability

On Tuesday, HP added two new iPaq smartphones to its portfolio. But before you go getting too attached, you should know that for the time being, they'll only be available in Europe. Partnering with Vodafone, the HP iPaq Data Messenger and the HP iPaq Voice Messenger will first be offered in the United Kingdom and then eventually make their way to the rest of Europe.

Will they ever reach the United States and join the HP iPaq 910c Business Messenger? Well, we asked our HP contact, who said she hasn't heard anything about a stateside release but would … Read more

AT&T debuts Samsung Epix smartphone

On Tuesday, AT&T announced the newest addition to its smartphone family, the Samsung Epix, and if you think it's simply a minor upgrade to the Samsung BlackJack II, think again.

True, on the surface, the Epix looks pretty much like the BlackJack II, save for a couple of different buttons, but Samsung stepped it up and equipped the smartphone with a touch screen and optical mouse. That's right. You can now interact with your device through the 2.5-inch screen (with your finger or built-in stylus) and navigate with the traditional controls or with the optical … Read more

Where have all the PDAs gone?: Ask the Editors

Q: I was browsing CNET, and noticed that PDAs have dropped off the map. It's been "the talk" for years that phones and PDAs were going to converge and neither would exist alone as we know them. Did it happen? Did I miss it? I've been an avid Palm user (even have programmed them for work), but of course Palm/PalmSource/Aspect is tanking with a couple Treos as the only remaining flotsam. The TX was great...but is going. Hewlett-Packard's iPaq is tragically bland. So, what's a PDA guy to do?

What would … Read more

Search for your home with your smartphone

It sure is hard to keep your home these days, and it's not a good time to sell it, either. But if you just want to look around, checking the market, it has never been more convenient.

Recently, I blogged about how you can search for a new home on your iPhone, but now, if you own a BlackBerry or any other smartphone, you can do that, too.

Coldwell Banker, the company that released the iPhone-optimized home-hunting Web site, announced recently its new Web sites designed specifically for BlackBerry and other smartphone users.

BlackBerry owners can just go to … Read more

Sprint HTC Touch Pro delayed

Back at CTIA Fall 2008, Sprint announced that it would offer the HTC Touch Pro smartphone with an expected ship date of October 19. Well, with the date drawing close, I thought I'd check in with Sprint to see about getting a review unit; plus, I wanted to dispel a nasty rumor I had been hearing about a delayed launch. Friends, it's no rumor. The Touch Pro will not be available on the 19, but now we're looking to see the Windows Mobile 6.1 device around the end of October/early November. Here is the statement … Read more
