The hard-drive activity LED on your computer's front panel flashes when your HDD is active. It blinks reassuringly when you think your system has frozen up -- or it did, when computer cases still had HDD LEDs. Fewer and fewer PCs display HDD LEDs, though most motherboards still support them. No need for hardware mods with Free HDD LED. This portable freeware monitors your HDDs, including SSDs, and displays disk activity in a desktop widget and system tray icon. It monitors SATA and IDE internal drives as well as USB drives, which means it's compatible with most drives, … Read more
SSDs, or solid-state drives, are much faster than the fastest disk drive, but their price-to-capacity ratio means that most users who boot their systems from an SSD don't have much extra room for programs and data, especially big stuff like video and games. The usual solution is to park data and even Temp folders on a conventional HDD, but that can compromise the performance that you paid for when you bought an SSD, and some programs and games might not even run. Moba's SymMover offers an interesting alternative. This simple freeware moves data to another disk and creates … Read more
We've found the perfect accessory for your next cell phone rave/love-in.
The Hugvie is a colorful cushion shaped a bit like a pudgy stick figure (or the old AOL Instant Messenger logo). When you slip your cell phone into a pocket on the Hugvie, the cushion vibrates in sympathy with your caller's voice, creating a physical sensation of his or her alluring tones.… Read more
If you are among the multitudes who enjoy Instagram and its photo-filter ilk, you'll have fun experimenting with 100 Cameras in 1 HD, a funky iPad camera app that provides 100 photo filters and sliders to adjust their effects.

Samsung's smartphone shipments soared over the same period last year, allowing it to easily grab the lion's share of the global market, while Nokia's share plummeted, a market researcher said Thursday. Another market researcher put Samsung No.1 in the overall cell phone market.

We admit that we did not have particularly high hopes for DesktopSnowOK. This type of desktop enhancement typically leaves us annoyed and frustrated as we end up sacrificing system performance for special effects that aren't that special. But unlike most programs of this sort, we actually found DesktopSnowOK to be pretty impressive. It's not the kind of program that we'd usually use, but people who like the idea of having snowflakes or other objects blowing around on their screen will likely find it quite fun.
DesktopSnowOK is highly customizable, which is what makes it so enjoyable to … Read more
We like puppies, and we were prepared to release our inner 12-year-old girl upon downloading Cute Puppy Clock. Unfortunately, though, our plans to squeal and giggle fell flat. Although the program is in fact a clock that involves cute puppies, it has drawbacks that make it hard to recommend, even for puppy-lovers.
There's really not much to Cute Puppy Clock, which is part of the problem. It's a couple of inches tall and features a puppy standing on what looks like a wooden crate. The time is displayed on the crate, 24-hour style, in a goofy font that'… Read more

It offers separate downloads for 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Windows XP, Vista, and 7. We tried the 64-bit version in … Read more
Apple's iTunes is one of the most popular music-managing programs available for Windows. It can organize thousands of songs and play them back in a high-quality audio format. It also makes it easy to buy music from Apple's huge online store. Is it the best choice for Windows users? That depends. If you own an iPod or similar Apple device, iTunes is probably the easiest way to link your device to your Windows PC. But it's a large program that not only manages your tunes but also wants to manage your videos, podcasts, audiobooks, and other media. … Read more
