Yesterday Apple released the first update to OS X Lion, but people who expected the first update to bring about major changes or fixes to problems that developed with the initial release of the OS may have to wait for a future release. The update is a relatively small one, at around 17MB for some people when downloaded through Software Updaate, but around 80MB as a standalone updater. For now the updater is just a minor bugfix that addresses some of the issues people have had with Lion, and enhanced fixes will likely come with the more hyped 10.7.… Read more
Less than a month after releasing Lion, Apple's rolled out its first update.
In a software update that went out this afternoon, the company released OS X 10.7.1, a download that fixes a handful of bugs left by the initial release. The full list includes:
Address an issue that may cause the system to become unresponsive when playing a video in Safari Resolve an issue that may cause system audio to stop working when using HDMI or optical audio out Improve the reliability of Wi-Fi connections Resolve an issue that prevents transfer of your data, settings, and … Read more
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G LTE (Verizon) has the same thin, iPad 2-like design as the Wi-Fi-only version of the tablet. So the question is, are blazingly fast 4G speeds worth being stuck in a two-year commitment?
Sure, you could forgo the contract and pay extra for the tablet, but in that case you might as well plop down cash for the Wi-Fi only Tab 10.1.
No, if you're interested in the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G LTE (Verizon), then you're obviously interested in your tablet always being connected. Well, depending on Verizon's … Read more
We love a good adventure game, and Samantha Swift and the Hidden Roses certainly qualifies, as long as solving puzzles meets your criteria for adventure. As much as we enjoyed the game, however, we were quite put off by all of the advertising and uninvited bloatware that comes along with it.
Samantha Swift looks like it's going to be a lightweight program at just over 720K, but all that download really includes is the Free Ride Games Player. The actual game must be downloaded using the player, and at 112MB, it's not nearly as small as you may … Read more
We love puzzle games, and all the better if there's something about them that engages our word nerd tendencies. Letter Blocks combines aspects of the puzzle game Tetris with the word-forming challenges of Scrabble. It's not perfect, but it is an awful lot of fun.
The game's interface consists of a grid of letters, which you must string together into words that are at least three letters long. Forming a word causes the letters used to disappear, making more room on the screen for the letters that drop from the top. The rate at which the letters … Read more
The term "thin and light" has a flexible meaning in the laptop world. Currently, to be truly thin, a PC must be in the same range as the MacBook Air. Still, plenty of thicker 13-inch laptops still exist that would have been considered thin a few years ago, but seem merely normal today. The Asus U31SD-A1 is just that sort of laptop. Its thickness is more akin to a 13-inch Apple MacBook Pro, but Asus' laptop lacks an optical drive. We reviewed a nearly identical Asus U31JG laptop a few months ago, noting that it was a solid … Read more
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1's beautiful 1,280x800-pixel screen is great for watching movies. The Honeycomb tablet supports WMV9, WMV7, WMV8, H.264, MPEG4, Xvid, DivX, H.263, and VP8 video codecs. If your movie isn't already in one of the supported formats or it's still on a DVD, you'll need to encode/re-encode it first. Here's how:
Step 1: Download and install HandBrake.
Step 2: Click on the Source button, and select your movie. For DVDs, select "Folder" then select the "VIDEO_TS" folder from your DVD drive. HandBrake does … Read more

Facebook's chat feature is a great way to have instant contact with your friends, but it's not always practical to stay logged in to the site all day long (ahem, such as while you're at work). Chit Chat for Facebook acts just like Facebook's own chat feature, but it lets you chat without using your Web browser.
The program's user interface is pretty self-explanatory. Once you sign in using your Facebook username and password, all of your friends who are available to chat appear as "online." Double clicking on a specific person introduces … Read more
One thing we hate is a program that installs and replaces things on our computer without our permission. It's just plain rude. While FaceSmooch does indeed supply animated emoticons you can use in Facebook chat, its shady tactics prevent us from recommending it.
FaceSmooch overtakes your browser by adding a toolbar and replacing your default homepage without your permission. The homepage resembles the Google homepage, but with a suspicious-looking animated ad at the bottom. The toolbar includes a search field and buttons for YouTube, the weather, a radio, and games. But you can't actually access any of the … Read more
