RIM rejects claims of weak PlayBook battery

RIM has rebutted recent claims that its upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook tablet is hampered by a short battery life.

On Tuesday, Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu issued a report in which he cited unnamed sources saying that the PlayBook's battery lasts only a few hours, compared with Samsung's Galaxy Tab, which lasts for six hours, and Apple's iPad, which runs for 10 hours on single charge. The analyst pointed to the weak battery life as a reason why Research In Motion has delayed the launch of the device until the company's May 2011 quarter.

Amazon, Apple, Netflix tops in customer satisfaction

Online stores scored record sales this holiday season, but it's not just low prices and a tentatively improving economy that may have brought in the buyers.

Though customer satisfaction with the top 40 online retailers dipped 1 percent this year, scoring 78 out of 100, that number still proved much higher than in prior years, according to survey results released yesterday by ForeSee Results.

Among the online businesses tracked in ForeSee's E-Retail Satisfaction Index (U.S. Holiday Edition), Amazon, Netflix, QVC.com, Avon.com, LLBean.com, Newegg.com, and Apple.com were highest in customer satisfaction, each scoring … Read more

Could Apple ship 65 million iPads next year?

Some of the companies that manufacture parts for Apple's iPad are anticipating the company may ship 65 million of the tablet devices in 2011, according to an article in today's DigiTimes.

That number far outstrips current market estimates of about 45 million. As recently as this past summer, 25 million iPads in a year was considered a staggering number.

The estimates come via LG Display and Samsung, two of the companies that Apple has enlisted to build the display technology for the iPad. Looking at the 65 million figure as well as the fact that LG shipped 1.… Read more

Potential solution for podcasts not playing in iOS

A few months ago, we described a problem some people were having with iOS devices not being able to play podcasts. When attempting to download various podcasts from the iTunes store, the system will display an error stating the "podcast name cannot be played on this iPhone/iPod/iPad."

In the past people found that resetting the device does not help, and when downloading the podcasts in iTunes, they then sync to the iOS device without error. This suggests one problem might be with the way the iOS devices are managing their connections with the podcast sources, and … Read more

Apple sued over privacy in iPhone, iPad apps

Apple is being sued for allegedly letting mobile apps on the iPhone and iPad send personal information to ad networks without the consent of users.

Jonathan Lalo, who filed the lawsuit on Thursday in U.S. District Court in San Jose, Calif., alleges that Apple's iPhones and iPads let ad networks track which applications people download, how often they're used, and for how long, according to a Bloomberg article published today.

Specifically, the suit alleges that the ad networks are able to trace an iPhone or iPad using the unique device identifier, or UDID, which is a number … Read more

Rumor: Apple prepping three iPad 2 versions

Apple is working on three versions of the iPad 2, DigiTimes reported today.

Citing an unnamed source, DigiTimes claims one model of Apple's next tablet will feature Wi-Fi only, while another will provide UMTS connectivity and Wi-Fi. The third model would apparently boast CDMA access, along with Wi-Fi connectivity. UMTS, or Universal Mobile Telecommunications System, is a 3G technology used by AT&T and T-Mobile in the United States. Verizon and Sprint use CDMA, or code division multiple access, for 3G.

DigiTimes' sources claim that about two-thirds of Apple's iPad shipments feature 3G connectivity, which may be … Read more

Amazon: Many iPad owners also buying Kindles

Another week, another press release from an e-reader manufacturer talking up big sales. This time it's Amazon announcing that the third-generation Kindle has become the best-selling product in the company's history in just five months. It's officially gone past "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows (Book 7)," the previous reigning champ.

After Bloomberg reported last week that sales for the Kindle 3 were going even better than expected--sources claimed Amazon was due to sell more than 8 million Kindles in 2010--this latest announcement doesn't exactly come as a surprise. But what's interesting about … Read more

Got a new iPad? Find the best apps in our iPad Starter Kit

There had already been years of speculation before Apple's iPad finally made it on stage with Steve Jobs this year. Every Macworld Expo and Apple event for the past few years had always had a run-up with rumors of a new slate device that just might make its first appearance on stage. But it was always pushed out to the next Apple event.

When it was finally released, there were mixed reviews. Some wanted it to be a laptop, while others couldn't get enough of Apple's larger touch-screen device. But over the coming months, the iPad would … Read more

It's tablet time at CES 2011

For the Consumer Electronics Show, set for early January, 2011 is shaping up to be the year of the tablet. Yet the most (some would say only) successful tablet to date is the one that won't be at CES. Apple sold 7.5 million iPads in the first six months and no doubt millions more this holiday season. Its shadow will hang over the show, forcing a wide range of companies--chipmakers; computer hardware and consumer-electronics companies; software developers and wireless carriers--to announce plans for tablets. Here's what we're expecting to see.
