What's inside the Mac Book Pro

Although many of those who have ordered the Mac Book Pro are still waiting for it to arrive, the folks at Other World Computing have already taken their new laptop apart.

Not much to say, but check out the photos for yourself. O'Reilly's MacDev Center notes that it appears easier to take apart than the prior PowerBooks.

Apple nears billion song mark

Apple Computer's iTunes Music Store is closing in on the 1 billion song sales mark.

At last count, the company had just over 998 million songs sold, meaning today could be the day it hits the magic number. The company has promised a bevy of prizes to the person who downloads the billionth song. Other prizes are going to those who download every 100,000th song.

Let the rumors begin...

Apple Computer is promising to introduce some "fun new products" next week, but it was quite vague in its hint of what those products might be.

In an e-mail sent to journalists, the company merely said the invited scribes should come to Apple's Cupertino, Calif., headquarters next Tuesday to learn more.

OSx86 Project forums back online

The OSx86 Project's forums came back online over the holiday weekend after site administrators removed links to patches developed by a hacker named Maxxuss, according to a posting on the site.

The forums were shut down last week after the site said it had received a notice under the Digital Millenium Copyright Act. At various points last week, the site contained links to Maxxuss' Web site, where PC owners could find patches allowing them to run a recent version of Mac OS on their non-Apple x86 PCs, which Apple forbids.

At the request of Apple's lawyers, the OSx86 … Read more

iPod-using Olympians are uncontrived Apple ads

Apple Computer doesn't have to be a sponsor to get advertising mileage out of the Winter Olympics--the athletes have inadvertently launched their own iPod campaign.

A story in the Baltimore Sun Friday points out that Olympic athletes from around the globe are like live billboards for the digital music player, which they have been seen using during practice and competition.

The U.S. snowboarding team is outfitted with Burton Snowboards' jackets already wired for iPods with an iPod-sized pocket, speakers in the hood and a control panel on one of the sleeves, according to the story. And Shaun White, … Read more

New MacOS 10.4.4 hacked for non-Apple x86 PCs

PC users might well remember how a bite of the forbidden apple cheated humanity out of paradise forever, but those who wish to tempt fate will find a hacked version of Mac OS 10.4.4 available Wednesday to run on Intel-based PCs other than the ones approved by Cupertino.

The Mac OS x86 forums contained new details about how to download patches that would allow the latest version of the Mac OS to a non-Apple PC running a chip with the x86 instruction set. Apple has expressly forbidden anyone from running its operating system on hardware that it has … Read more

Faster Core Duo chips mean slower MacBook deliveries?

Many Apple customers were delighted by their Valentine's Day present of faster Intel Core Duo chips in their new MacBook Pro systems, at no additional charge. But those who ordered their systems right after the January announcement are going to have to cool their heels waiting for that extra speed.

Jonathan Taylor (thanks, Jonathan), in the TalkBack forums discussing the news, noted that the announcement about the faster chips obscured the fact that his $2,499 MacBook Pro, ordered the same day it was announced, would now be arriving about two weeks later than expected. An Apple customer service … Read more

Your MacBook Pro is in the mail

Apple Computer announced Tuesday that the 15-inch MacBook Pro will begin shipping this week, about a month after the company introduced the first Apple laptop built around an Intel processor.

At the MacWorld conference in San Francisco last month, CEO Steve Jobs said the newly named MacBook would come in two models: a $1,999 model with an 80GB hard drive running at 1.67GHz a second version with a 1.83GHz processor and a 100GB hard drive for $2,499. On Tuesday, Apple said the laptops are actually shipping with slightly faster chips--1.83 GHz and 2.0 GHz--at … Read more

Rumor: Large-screen iPod in the works

Think Secret, an Apple-focused rumor site that has had some notable hits and misses, is reporting that Apple is "nearing completion" of a video iPod that would have two significant enhancements.

The new iPod will reportedly sport a 3.5-inch display, a substantial boost from the current 2.5-inch screens. Some of the extra real estate needed for such a roomy screen would be freed up by eliminating the scroll wheel--sort of. Instead, a digital click wheel would be used, "one that overlays the touch-sensitive display and appears when a finger touches it and disappears when the … Read more

Windows on MacTel inches toward reality

The holy grail of a dual-boot Windows/Mac OS X machine remains elusive, as does Virtual PC for the Intel Mac. But for those who want some Windows functions on their Intel Mac, the folks over at the OSX86 project say they have managed to get Wine running on Mac OS X for Intel.

For those who aren't familiar with it, Wine is an open source program that lets users run some Windows software on Unix and Linux machines. I'm not an expert in the technology, but there are some screenshots and discussion on their forums that get … Read more
