If you ever get the feeling that no one is listening when you pick up your smartphone, it appears you won't have that problem with the Moto X.
Motorola's new flagship smartphone, which is expected to be released later this summer, will sport an always-on voice command feature that will allow users to initiate commands without touching a button on the handset, according to a new demonstration video that appears to come from Canadian wireless carrier Rogers. First spotted by Ausdroid, the video shows a user retrieving weather information on the handset by speaking the words, "OK … Read more
Google released an update Tuesday that restores the ability to place phone calls through its Hangouts messaging system.
The new functionality, which will roll out during the next couple of days, allows users of the service to place calls from Gmail, Google+, and the Chrome extension, holding conversations with up to 10 people at a time. Also, the Web giant announced that calls to the United States and Canada from countries where Hangouts is available are free of charge.
"This is just the beginning," Google said in a statement. "You'll start to see more Google Voice … Read more
It's easy to think that The Voice: On Stage is nothing more than a quick cash in on the "The Voice" brand, and while it certainly has its fair share of issues, there is a solid app under all the gloss, here. Unsurprisingly, The Voice: On Stage is a karaoke app, operating very much the same as other popular iOS karaoke apps, from the interface to the track downloads, to the cost of those tracks.
Installation of The Voice: On Stage is time consuming. Because none of the tracks are included with the app when it is … Read more
Easy Voice Recorder isn't easy, as its name implies, but it does give plenty of options and decent audio quality. You'll be impressed at how much it offers in recording widgets alone. This app's layout leaves a lot of other recording apps in the dust. It offers a lot of modern style in the buttons and menus, definitely more than your average recording app. It includes a bunch of different widget … Read more
What makes Voxer useful (for those who don't have unlimited voice plans) is that it doesn't use up minutes from your carrier; it only uses your data allowance. And even with a lot of voice messages, photos, and texts, it uses only a small amount of your data pool. Sprint, which was known … Read more
It's long been observed that many kids with autism have a hard time communicating and socializing with others. Now a new study using MRI scans provides some clues as to why.
Thanks to a weaker connection between the brain's language and reward centers, the human voice may provide little to no pleasure at all to kids with autism.
As they report this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers were able to spot "underconnectivity" using functional MRI, which tracks blood flow to look for brain activity.
Researchers scanned the brains of 20 … Read more
LG is hard at work on a new smartphone that will allow for always-on voice commands, a new report claims.
The handset, which will launch in 2014, will allow users to speak commands without needing to touch the screen first, Gotta Be Mobile is reporting on Tuesday, citing three people who claim to have knowledge of LG's plans. The technology will also allow for a broader range of commands than those available now.
Although Gotta Be Mobile cites LG's plans, it's highly likely that it won't be alone in launching a device next year that features … Read more
Audio Memos Free is a fairly basic voice recorder without a lot of frills or added features, but with a solid, smooth performance that will work well for most casual users. Power users might want more, but the voice recording and editing functions here are all well-built and make for a solid, well-rounded, free app that outperforms many other free voice recorders, including the built-in tool that comes on all iPhones.
When you first open the app you can immediately start recording. You can change quite a few settings, as well, including the amplification, normalization, name, and quality of the … Read more
Whenever I write about landline alternatives like the NetTalk Duo or Ooma Telo, readers invariably line up to sing the praises of the Obihai OBi100, a voice-over-IP phone adapter that many say is a better alternative.
It's definitely a cheaper one, especially today: Obihai (via Amazon) has the OBi100 VoIP Telephone Adapter for $29.99 shipped. That's after applying coupon code TALK2DAD at checkout, and about 25 percent off the regular price.
Update: The coupon code does not appear to be working at the moment. I'm checking with Obihai and will update the post again when I … Read more
