How I quit worrying and learned to love Vine

I'll admit it, I misjudged Vine. Here's why.

One of the first things I read about Vine, Twitter's new stand-alone video app for iPhone and iPod Touch, was Jack Dorsey's gushing tweet about the service.

"Vine is the most exciting thing I've seen in a while," Dorsey, Twitter's co-founder (and also founder of Square), tweeted yesterday morning. "Not just because of the team, because it brings an entirely new art form to the world."

Facebook unfriends Twitter's Vine app

Friday's CNET Update is looking so Vine:

Today's tech news roundup looks at the latest skirmish between Facebook and Twitter. The new iPhone app Vine (owned by Twitter), lets users create six-second mash-up videos and share it on social media. But Facebook has blocked Vine from being able to find Facebook friends in the app. The move is similar to how Twitter shut off Facebook's Instagram from accessing its user data.

As the world is still learning what a Vine is, take a look at CNET's tips for using the app. Keep in mind that although … Read more

Facebook: Here's why we're blocking some apps

After taking heat for shutting off some apps' access to friend-finding data, Facebook says it's just protecting its assets.

The social network published a blog entry today, explaining that it's changed its policies to clarify this stance. Facebook didn't respond to press inquiries yesterday about why it had shut off access to its application programming interface, or API, for a number of apps. Access to the API allows developers to add features like Facebook logins and Facebook friend searches.

Facebook's director of platform partnerships and operations, Justin Osofsky, wrote in the blog that the company has … Read more

How to privately share a Vine video

Yesterday Twitter launched a new video sharing app called Vine. The service lets you compose and share six-second videos using its iPhone app. As Sharon Vaknin pointed out, currently there's no way to set any of your videos, or even your profile, to "private." Any videos you upload are going to be public; viewable by anyone using the service.

There is a way to create a video using the Vine app and share it privately, however. It's not an ideal workaround (that would be privacy settings in the app) but it's an easy way … Read more

Five things to know as you get started with Vine

As a social network built on keeping things short and sweet, it's no surprise that Twitter released today a secondary app that lets users (Twitter and otherwise) shoot and upload 6-second videos.

Of course, no later than a few hours after its launch, Vine was already being called the "Instagram for video," as users began sharing short clips of kids, stop-motion drawings, food, and, of course, puppies.

Currently, Vine is only available for iOS, but Twitter assures users that its app will be coming to other platforms "soon."

The app is pretty simple … Read more

Vine's quick-hit video 'tweets' might be the next big thing

Vine for iOS is a new social networking app that revolves around making short 6-second video loops with sound and then sharing them with others.

To get started, you can sign up with an e-mail and password directly with Vine or you can use your Twitter account for quick access. Once signed in, you'll see the Home feed that shows the latest videos from other users. A button in the upper-left corner lets you navigate between the home screen, a place to explore videos from other users, a personal activity section to view videos you've made, and a … Read more

Vine users unable to search for Facebook friends

Vine is not yet a day old and Facebook is already shutting its virtual doors to Twitter's newly acquired video-sharing service.

Vine users are suddenly blocked from using the app's friend-finding feature to look up Facebook friends. Instead of letting you search for your Facebook buddies, the Vine app responds with the message, "Vine is not authorized to make this Facebook request."

It looks like Facebook has blocked Vine from accessing its API, or application programming interface, which would let Vine extract that data.

The move sounds like what Twitter did to a few other companies … Read more

View some early Vine blockbusters: 6 seconds of pleasure

Six seconds isn't a lot of time to work with, but that's the length of video Twitter's new Vine service dishes out. The looping videos can be embedded in tweets and have already been described as "Instagram for video." Vine's out as of today as an app for iOS, with other platforms in the works.

The short time limit isn't stemming the flow of creativity from Vine's early users. So far, we've seen everything from a monster flick to a moving sale to a recipe demonstration. Here's a roundup of some noteworthy early Vine videos.… Read more

Twitter is loopy for Vine videos

Thursday's CNET Update is longer than six seconds:

Today's tech news roundup explains why Apple's latest earnings report of record revenue and sales has disappointed investors. Tim Cook also had little to say about an Apple television and fixes to the Maps app.

Netflix surprised analysts with reported profit and growth. Netflix will push out it's own TV series, "House of Cards," on Feb. 1, and new episodes of Arrested Development are arriving in May.

Hundreds of AT&T U-verse customers have had to live without TV, Internet or phone service for several days. … Read more

Twitter unveils Vine, its 6-second Instagram for video

Twitter today unveiled Vine, an app for iPhone and iPod Touch that lets anyone create and share short looping videos.

Twitter acquired Vine last fall, but anyone can use Vine regardless of whether they use Twitter. However, the service is clearly meant to be embedded anywhere, and there are plenty of examples of the videos being embedded in tweets. The service (see an example below) is being referred to by many as Twitter's "Instagram for video."
