Today's biggest story: A new way to activate a cell phone

With all of the hoopla surrounding the iPhone, we have all forgotten about the most important development of today's release: a new way to activate a cell phone. You can have your iPhone. I'll take the home activation and enjoy it for much longer than you will enjoy your new phone.

For years, I have been buying new cell phones from Verizon Wireless. And in each of those years, I've been forced to waste the better part of a Saturday afternoon on activating the new phone I had been coveting for a few months.

Here's the … Read more

PS3 is tops in Australia and a failure in the US

Michael Ephraim, managing director of Sony Australia, has officially announced that the Playstation 3 is the console war king - in Australia. According to Ephraim, sales figures in the Land Down Under have shown the "PS3...outselling Wii and Xbox 360 every week, except for last week."

The recent stories like this one out of the Sony camp are becoming pathetic at best. The company who formerly touted its dominance over the video game industry is left touting a 50,000 unit sale for March and a sales lead "for every week, except for the last week.&… Read more

5 steps you need to ignore all of this iPhone coverage

As someone who tries to be aware of almost everything going on the world of technology, I am, for the lack of a better term, fed up with all of this iPhone news coverage. Even worse, I find myself submitting to the pressure and talking about the phone that has captured the public interest like nothing I have ever seen before. And while this instantaneous moment of bliss overcomes me with Apple love, I somehow find a way to break out of that bubble and develop a sense of hatred for all of this iPhone coverage.

It has finally become … Read more

Future Implications: Netflix - The Next Monopoly

Just last year, Netflix announced that it owned a patent on its business model and sued Blockbuster for patent infringement.

Why would a company like Netflix -- the proven leader in the "mail me" renting business -- decide to pick on a company who was doing all it could to stay afloat by trying the same business model? Because Netflix smelled blood and business is business. Without Blockbuster nipping at its heels, Netflix would not only be able to rule a business model that will take us into the next decade, it would be free from any significant … Read more

Apple's Digital Home For the Night: The Apple Store

According to people familiar with the impending iPhone launch, it looks like Apple has asked its retail store employees to take a nap overnight in each of its brick and mortar locations. In most average-sized stores, this means the store manager and one other lucky person will be the first to actually be able to fulfill the literal meaning of the old saying, "sleeping on the job."

Perhaps most interesting about this slumber party is the feedback future line gatherers are spewing about this obvious security measure. In a number of comments on blog posts and on various … Read more

3 Products Apple Should Create to Incorporate the iPhone Into the Digital Home

For a guy who writes about the Digital Home, I feel a little left out of all this iPhone talk. Not only is the iPhone a "non-Digital Home" device, I was having a hard time trying to figure out how to make it a staple in my home. Lucky for you, I found three ways to do it. Check them out.

1. The next-generation iMac that is fully-equipped with an iPhone docking station. That's right, you heard it here first. I think Apple should release the next iMac with an iPhone dock that would allow you to … Read more

The Main Reason for Apple's Success: Recognition of the Importance of the Home

As I sit in my bedroom writing this on a somewhat cool morning for June, I couldn't help but be inspired by what is sitting in front of me: a wireless Apple keyboard and Mighty Mouse which interact with my Mac Mini that is connected to my HDTV. Sitting next to the Mac Mini is my Apple TV -- connected to my HDTV via HDMI of course. So, with that in mind, I couldn't help but ask if Apple's push for control of the home will lead to future success. My guess: absolutely.

For decades, Apple was … Read more

Each Thursday here on The Digital Home, I will be discussing a current topic of interest that may have serious implications on your home in the coming days, months or years. The topics may range from groundbreaking new products to government legislation to adults only video games -- our topic of interest today.

In a setback for Take-Two Interactive, the company's Manhunt 2 video game has been banned from sale in the UK because of its ESRB Adults Only rating. Even worse for Take-Two, Best Buy and Wal-Mart -- two significant video game retailers -- have historically banned Adults … Read more
