YouMail visual voice mail iPhone app gets pushy

We're big fans of visual voice mail, which lets you view, and then listen to, your voice mail messages in any order you'd like, not just chronologically. It's even better when that service is free (voice-to-text transcriptions, however, are typically extra). To that end, we were happy to see that YouMail's visual voice mail app for iPhone updated on Thursday, getting features such as push notification, and a new activities ribbon that lets you reply to and forward messages. You can also now organize messages by folders.

In addition, YouMail 1.5 includes a feature for … Read more

T-Mobile releases Visual Voicemail for Android

Just as it continues to introduce new Google Android phones, T-Mobile is also releasing mobile applications to the Android Market. Recent software includes a T-Mobile HotSpot locator and My Account, which lets customers check their remaining minutes, get support, and pay their bill.

One of the most interesting is Visual Voicemail that gives customers complete control of their voice mail without making a call. Visual Voicemail is available for free to all Android users. A small (and free) adjustment must be made to your data plan, but you can complete the set up in three simple steps.

The 404 394: Where The 404 gets a 404

On today's show, it's the last day of the Becks Beer sponsorship, so we end on a high note. Joining us in the studio again is Caroline McCarthy, bringing her wit and charm, and we also have Timothy Geisenheimer, who always has something clever to say. So apparently, CNET broke during today's live stream, which is why some people are getting 404 error pages when they visit our Web site. Today's Audio Draft is sponsored by Becks Beer in Conjunction with Last.fm, a subsidiary of CBS Corporation, 5000 XP GTS, is a rising European pop-rock star, Paolo Nutini.

After featuring mostly Indie bands, we're going to bring in some pop from across the pond. Paolo Nutini has a surprisingly sultry yet mature voice for a boy of only 22 years old! Trust us, you'll get knocked off your feet when you hear a dulcet voice come out of what seems to be a skinny Scottish kid. On today's show, we feature two songs from his album Sunnyside Up. The first is "Coming Up Easy", which is a nice tune about waking up in the morning to your significant other. Rounding out the show, we finish with "Candy," a slow-going song about getting some "sweets" from your lover before they leave. Yes, Paolo Nutini is "geting-down" music.

The Semi-Weekly Audio Draft has become so popular that we're going to list our previous picks so you can find the great, new musicians we're featuring here on The 404:

Paolo Nutini Koufax Why Priscilla Ahn Mayer Hawthorne The Hold Steady Grizzly Bear Matt Pond PA The Twilight and the Sound

On top of some great music, we have some great stories on today's show. At the top of the show, we discover the coolest invention ever: the dissolvable bikini! We wonder why it took so long to create this! All this is courtesy of Tim Geisenheimer's German descendants. It might be something you should give your date if you live in New York City! According to Forbes.com, NYC is the best place to live for singles. Caroline really disagrees, but that probably has to do with the fact that women in their 20s outnumber guys by a heavy margin. Wilson loves this, but bemoans the fact that a lot of these ladies are always trying to find the next best one.

In more technology-related news, AT&T and Barnes & Nobles have announced free Wi-Fi in their coffee shops. Sounds like a great idea at first because we've all hated paying $12.95 for an hour of Internet access, but imagine all the start-ups and college students crowding what used to be a nice place for conversation. Also, Twitter and Facebook are coming to Xbox 360, while we don't really have any interest in Twittering while we're playing Resident Evil 5, we kind of hope we can hook up with other gamers through Facebook Connect. Finally, there is a movement that we can all jump on! David Pogue's campaign to bring back the "BEEP", rather than the freakin' 15-second long voice mail message that we all love to hate. If we can call you from our phone, we know how to leave you a message!

iPhone Visual Voice mail service problems? Get it fixed here!

Over the weekend, we began to see reports from iPhone users who hadn't received Visual Voice mail notifications for as long as two weeks. We were a bit skeptical until we tested our own iPhone and discovered three messages from the previous week. After checking with friends, we found five additional reports of lost Visual Voice mail messages.

As of now, we have to agree with TechCrunch's MG Siegler who called "AT&T Is A Big, Steaming Heap Of Failure." Though we're just as dumbfounded and amazed at how widespread the problem is, there … Read more

Replace your T-Mobile voicemail with Google Voice visual mail

Google Voice released its first mobile client to the Android Market this week. The mobile application allows you to make calls and send text messages from your Google Voice number. Also included with the service is visual voice mail, which offers transcriptions of your messages.

The new service works by converting your voice messages into text that is easy to read. When a new message is available, Google Voice sends an alert to the notification bar. The transcription is not always perfect, but most messages are readable. During playback, you can easily jump to any part of the recording by … Read more

Get Comcast services on your iPhone

The Comcast Mobile App offers a lot of what users have been clamoring for from the popular cable service, but falls just short of being great. You'll now be able to access Comcast e-mails and digital voice mails right from your iPhone, using a touch interface much like Apple's e-mail and voice mail experience, but in a unified in-box for both. An intuitive, tabbed interface lets you quickly switch between new e-mail and voice messages. A separate Digital Voice section offers more options, listing missed calls, outgoing calls, and voice mail. There is also an included address book … Read more

iPhone syncing app adds voice mail and memo transfers

The latest update for Mark/Space's The Missing Sync for iPhone, a popular phone-syncing utility, has fixed the app's compatibility with iPhone OS 3.0. Released this week, version 2.0.2 also adds syncing support for transferring voice mail and voice memos between the iPhone and a Mac.

According to an e-mail sent to users, the app is now completely compatible with iPhone OS 3.0, thus eliminating problems that the prior version had with syncing new notes, text messages, or call history. Now they can be imported into a SMS Log, Call Log, or Mark/Space … Read more

YouMail's visual voice mail comes calling on iPhone

YouMail's visual voice mail app for iPhone may look less sexy than the sleek, crafted application interfaces we've grown used to, but in its first effort, functionality will be more important than form.

This last weekend, users of YouMail's freemium Visual Voicemail Plus service were able to start reading and responding to voice messages from iPhones. Like rival visual voice mail services, YouMail lets you manage voice messages like e-mail messages in exchange for making the service your default mobile answering machine. In addition to playing back voice messages in any order you choose, you're able … Read more

Skype announces voice-to-text messaging

VoIP provider Skype plans to announce Tuesday that it will be working with SpinVox to provide its users with voice-to-SMS messaging in four languages.

This adds another option to Skype's messaging notifications for both Windows and Mac, and it includes a free e-mail notification or a simple SMS notification when a contact leaves a message.

Converting the messages from voice to text won't be cheap, however. Users will pay 25 cents per message, not including the standard Skype text message rate, and long voicemails could be spread out over as many as three messages. If the entire voicemail … Read more
