Voice and gesture control comes to Samsung UNES7500 LED TV

LAS VEGAS--Samsung's Smart Interaction allows control of certain TV functions by talking or gesturing to the TV, where a built-in microphone and camera captures your voice and movements.

The UNES7500 series of LED TVs is the company's least-expensive with the feature, which also makes cameos on the step-up UNES8000 LED and the PNE8000 plasma. If you'd like to read more about Smart Interaction, here's what we know so far.

Aside from that little extra, the UNES7500 has similar features to the UNES7100, highlighted by a 0.2-inch-thin bezel (admittedly it bulges a bit around the camera/… Read more

'Ultimate' Samsung LED TV still lacks full-array backlight

LAS VEGAS--On high-end LED-based TVs, our favorite picture quality extra is a full-array backlight with local dimming, which allows different areas of the screen to dim independently of one another.

Unlike the flagship LED TVs of LG, Sony, and Sharp Elite, Samsung's best LED, the UNES8000 still lacks the full-array part, but the company says its local dimming, despite relying on LEDs around the edge of the screen, has been improved over last year's version. Check out our breakdown of LED backlight schemes here for some background.

Dubbed "micro-dimming ultimate," the new feature divides the screen … Read more

Quick Take: Samsung UN40D5003

Although CNET did not review the Samsung UN40D5003, we can provide some basic information about it.

According to Samsung's Web site, this is a 40-inch LED-based LCD TV that measures 2 inches thick. The site mentions a "Clear Motion Rate of 120," which is Samsung's term for a 120Hz refresh rate (although Best Buy's Web site lists the refresh rate as 60Hz, which appears to be an error). In our experience there's no picture quality benefit to either feature.

That said, at $500 as of press time, the UN40D5003 has a very aggressive price … Read more

Anonymous lashes out at Norway massacre suspect

The man accused of the attacks in Norway last Friday that left dozens of people dead is the latest target of the "hacktivist" group Anonymous.

In an attempt to discredit the manifesto of accused murderer Anders Behring Breivik, Anonymous has unveiled its own campaign known as Operation UnManifest. The hactivist group's latest action is aimed at hacking into and modifying Breivik's "European Declaration of Independence" with the goal of republishing fake editions of the so-called manifesto everywhere online, thus turning Anders into a "joke."

As part of Operation UnManifest, Anonymous also is … Read more

Low rates of metal recycling handicap green tech

Valuable metals contained in electronics and green-technology products are being recycled at "discouragingly" low rates, raising the prospect of material shortages, according to a United Nations-sponsored report.

The U.N. report, released last week, found a wide disparity in metal recycling rates and very low rates among even highly prized metals, such as gold, from electronics. The study recommends using product designs that make recycling easier and addressing the problem of obsolete electronics. About 18 percent of TVs and PCs are recycled and about 10 percent of cell phones, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Less than one third of about 60 metals had an end-of-life recycling rate over 50 percent and 34 elements had a recycling rate below 1 percent. In addition to creating a larger supply of metals, recycling is estimated to be two to 10 times more resource-efficient than smelting metals from ore, according to the study.

"In theory, metals can be used over and over again, minimizing the need to mine and process virgin materials and thus saving substantial amounts of energy and water while minimizing environmental degradation," said Achim Steiner, U.N. under-secretary general and executive director of the U.N. Environment Program, in a statement.

Lead, which is most commonly used in batteries, is the most recycled, with a rate around 80 percent. Iron and other components of stainless steel are recycled at over 50 percent, as are precious metals platinum, gold, and silver. Gold is recycled at a high rate from industrial use, but only 10 percent to 15 percent from electronics, such as cell phones.

Meanwhile, there are several metals considered vital to green-technology… Read more

Skip this uninstaller

Simnet UnInstaller 2010 is a free utility for uninstalling programs from Windows PCs. It's compact and easy to use, and removes programs as completely as the Windows uninstaller. However, it does less than the Windows uninstall tool and similar free uninstallers. It also offers to help you manage your programs, but it only uninstalls them.

Simnet UnInstaller shares a similar interface with the developer's other tools, a compact, colorful dialog with buttons marked About, Status, Programs, Settings, and Help. The Settings are limited to check boxes for automatic updates and creating a System Restore point before uninstalling software. … Read more

North Korea's Twitter, YouTube accounts hijacked

The Twitter and YouTube accounts held by the North Korean government were hijacked over the weekend and used to post messages critical of the regime and mocking North Korea leader Kim Jong-Il's heir apparent, Kim Jong-Un.

The official Twitter account for North Korea posted messages on Saturday, the day of Jong-Un's birthday, calling for an uprising and criticizing him for reportedly hosting lavish parties while North Koreans starve, Reuters reported.

Meanwhile, an animation appeared on the regime's YouTube channel the same day showing Jong-Un mowing down impoverished women and children in a sports car, the report said. … Read more

Zipper up

Developers have answered the need for better ZIP utilities than Windows provides. We took a spin with CAM unZip, which offers to simplify the process of zipping and unzipping files in Windows but also packs power-user options such as a command-line interface, password compatibility, and the ability to run files upon extraction.

During setup, the installer recommends making CAM unZip your default compression utility, which we selected. The program's efficient interface has File and Help menus and icons for opening archives and creating new ones. The File menu lists Options, but "Option" would be more accurate since … Read more
