As the name implies, the International Space Station is a collaborative endeavor between global space agencies, each of which works on individual projects as well as team efforts. One of Japanese space agency JAXA's projects is, apparently, art -- more specifically, a project by artist Takura Osaka.
Called Spiral Top, it's a spinning gadget with LEDs in its prongs. When pushed through the zero-G atmosphere onboard the station, it allows a human photographer to take a beautiful, long-exposure light painting.
During his tenure aboard the ISS in 2009 -- and currently -- astronaut Koichi Wakada has been taking photos with the Spiral Top. He tweeted two recent pictures this week showing the device's passage through the station. … Read more
Sony will use the power of the Internet "cloud" to engage its customers in a new way that the company hopes will create a sense of awe in their experience of Sony products, CEO Kasuo Hirai said during a keynote at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas Tuesday.
During the keynote, Andrew House, president and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, took the stage briefly to make the two biggest announcements of the keynote: Sony's plans to offer a new streaming game service and cloud-based TV service via the company's popular PlayStation 4 game console.… Read more
Sony has sold more than 4.2 million PlayStation 4 gaming consoles, the company announced Tuesday at the 2014 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
Andrew House, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, said the PS4 launch was the largest console launch ever with Sony selling 2.1 million consoles in the first two weeks. That figure grew to 4.2 million units as of December 28, he boasted at Sony's keynote event.

LAS VEGAS -- Life up on the International Space Station presents a few more challenges than most of us deal with down here on Earth. Aside from reconstituted spinach, astronauts have to deal with disrupted sleep cycles due to the station orbiting around the Earth every 90 minutes.Lighting Science created special lightbulbs for the ISS. There are daylight bulbs with bluer light to encourage energy and activity during what would be daytime hours, and then there are lightbulbs that dial back on the blue to boost astronauts' production of melatonin for a good night's sleep. Those special bulbs are now available for terrestrial use.… Read more
In a year full of star-studded CES keynotes, Sony CEO Kaz Hirai is as big a name as any.
While it's not clear exactly what Hirai will talk about during his Tuesday morning keynote, it's a sure bet the company's PlayStation 4 will be a centerpiece, as will Sony's wide range of TVs and other consumer electronics.
One possibility is a discussion of mixing content and hardware, and the Wall Street Journal reported that Hirai may unveil a streaming service for the PS4.

Historically -- or at least at the six CES shows I've attended so far -- the big show hasn't been the best platform for video games. Sure, there's usually a presence of third-party console accessory manufacturers and a fair amount of impressive PC gaming hardware, but 2014 might make some serious gaming headlines.
We already know that Valve's SteamOS platform is going to be making a major showing at CES 2014, so we're anticipating Steam Machines (or SteamBoxes) not just from Valve, but from a bevy of third-party PC makers as well. The biggest news … Read more
Two astronauts successfully installed a replacement coolant pump aboard the International Space Station Tuesday, wrapping up a high-stakes two-spacewalk repair job and clearing the way for flight controllers to re-activate a critical coolant system.
"We'd just like to say thanks to all the great folks doing all this hard work to get this space station back up and running," spacewalker Rick Mastracchio radioed as he returned to the Quest airlock module.
"No, thank you guys," astronaut Doug Wheelock replied from mission control in Houston. "It's the best Christmas ever. Thanks, guys."

Will 2014 be the year when next-generation consoles hit their stride? The following 12 months after a console launch are always very telling, but for now all we can do is wait.
Putting the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 aside, there's still plenty of gas left in the tanks of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. We're still very much in the middle of their respective golden ages, and a lot of the games on this list will see releases on those platforms as well.
If there's anything I've learned from doing this list for the … Read more
