Hack a collaborative Google Map to share food reviews with friends

Services like Yelp and Urbanspoon are helpful when seeking a place to eat, but can sometimes overwhelm you with options. Additionally, you'll probably find comments that are unrealistic (possibly from an owner), and others written by people who simply can't be pleased mixed throughout any solid feedback.

Instead of trying to decode the truth, why not make a map that only you and your friends can edit and comment on? Here's how to get started:

Create the map that you and friends will be editing

Step 1: Head over to Google Maps in your Web … Read more

NoshList: Free waitlist app for restaurants

Last month, I stumbled into Umami Burger, a restaurant here in San Francisco. It was lunchtime on a weekend and the restaurant was crowded, but the host asked for my mobile phone number and told me the restaurant would text me when a table was ready.

There's an app for that, it appears, since the host put my number into an iPad. And it worked: About 10 minutes later, while I was out for a walk, the message came in. The app in question: NoshList, which is leaving closed beta and should be appearing for free in the App … Read more

As if Buffalo Wild Wings wasn't already great enough, the popular sports bar is now testing iPads as on-table ordering systems for its restaurants, giving customers the ability to choose their meals and pay for them without having to wait.

The iPads are being tested in Toronto and soon Minneapolis. Apple's tablet is encased in a rugged Hubworks case and can be used for more than just ordering your food. Facebook, Twitter, and interactive games are all part of the experience.

Tim Murphy, director of international business for Buffalo Wild Wings, told Computer World, "Ultimately, we are … Read more

TripAdvisor is the comprehensive companion app to the popular travel Web site of the same name. The Melt update: Great logistics--and free bacon!

The mobile ordering site went live recently for The Melt's chain of grilled cheese restaurants. The best feature of the app (and The Melt in general): you can add bacon to any sandwich for free. Although since the grilled cheese sandwiches themselves are $5.75, "free" is a bit of a stretch. But still, hey, sort of free bacon!

In the interest of research (and lunch), I checked out the new mobile site and the in-store follow-through at a nearby Melt location. What I found was a bug in the system (presumably a temporary problem), but also … Read more

Loku location discovery app knows hip from haute

There are probably hundreds of apps and sites that will help you find good places to eat and cool places to hang out. And then there's that gorilla, Yelp. But even in this crowded space, the new Loku has a secret sauce that works. It's too bad the best part of the site is not obvious, and that there's not yet a smartphone app from this company. But this is still a good site to get to know.

Loku finds news and recommends places in neighborhoods based on its algorithms that apply natural language processing and sentiment … Read more
