Free Wi-Fi for some cable subscribers in NYC area

Cablevision, Comcast, and Time Warner Cable are teaming up to allow their subscribers in New York City and the surrounding area to roam onto each other's Wi-Fi networks.

All three companies currently offer free Wi-Fi service to their cable subscribers in areas surrounding the Big Apple, including parts of Long Island, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Starting Thursday anyone who subscribes to broadband from any of these providers will get free Wi-Fi access on the two other cable operators' Wi-Fi networks.

Cablevision to offer 3D programming

Cablevision is the latest company eyeing 3D technology.

The cable provider announced Wednesday that it's using a 3D format called RealD to offer customers high-definition 3D programs. Licensed from 3D technology maker RealD, the format will let cable networks and providers send their content in 3D using Cablevision's current broadcast system and existing set-top boxes.

But customers do need a 3D-compatible TV, which are just now coming onto the market. And manufacturers who've spoken with CNET have indicated that their current 2D-only TVs can't be upgraded to 3D.

Cablevision to test PC-to-TV service

With more people keen to watch finger-chomping siblings, evolving dance moves, and chuckling babies on their TVs, Cablevision is trying out a service that could help.

The cable company announced a new service on Wednesday called PC to TV Media Relay that will let customers view content from their computers on their TVs. Similar to a remote desktop program, the service will wirelessly share whatever is on your PC with your TV screen, including e-mail, applications, and of course Web content.

Verizon changes tune on Wi-Fi

Verizon Communications has had a change of heart about using Wi-Fi to extend its wireless broadband offering as the company announces free access to Wi-Fi hot spots for its Fios and DSL Internet customers.

On Monday the company announced that customers subscribed to its Verizon Fios Internet service with 20Mbps per second downstream and 15Mbps upstream or faster and customers who subscribe to its 3Mbps/768 Kbps or higher DSL service will be able to connect to Verizon Wi-Fi hot spots, at no additional charge as part of their broadband service.
